The routes of various explorers are shown. This is the first state of the map, with the southern tip of South America veering sharply to the west. William P. Cumming calls it "One of the most important mother maps of the North American continent." Shirley 444 & Plate 327 - Strikingly beautiful double-hemisphere map of the world surrounded by allegoric pictorial representations, and with insets of the north and south poles, from Atlas...Maritumus Ofte Zee Atlas. Shirley notes that "Somewhat unusually the two main hemispheres have been engraved and the surrounding illustrations etched. In the corners are large and lively scenes allegorically representing the four elements. Fire is shown by war and destruction; air by the heavens; earth by havesting and husbandry; and water by ships and a spouting whale. There are groups of figures between the hemispheres and, above and below them, two smaller polar maps." He also notes that the date of the map "can just be discerned below the signature of the important Dutch engraver and artist Romeyn de Hooghe in the lower left-hand corner," but neither signature nor date could be found on this example. Shirley does mention that the map was reissued many times, but this does not match the later issues given. The margin at top is trimmed to within about -1/4" of the neat line, with the other margins about 1-1/2". There are a small number of expert repairs to the map (none really noticable unless held up to the light), and a tiny hole in the north pole inset, otherwise in very good or better condition, the colors rich and vibrant. Tooley, Mapping of America, Chap. 1, map 16 - Based on De l'Isle's 1722 map (plate 1 in Tooley), a reissue, with minor changes to the plate, of map 10 (1785), of which Tooley notes "The map is now redrawn and re-engraved with the inset continuation of the N.W. coast corrected according to Capt. Cook's discoveries. California is noticeably different and the names along the west coast are considerably altered... To the north appears

entrée d'Aguilar, entrée du Roi Georges and Fousang de Chinois. The Great Lakes are now more accurately drawn and the huge L. Bourbon compressed... The Papal line of Demarcation and the Isles de Quiros are erased and the title cartouche has been enlarged." This issue differs mainly in the alteration of the cartouche, with the royal arms gone along with any mention of the old regime. There seem to be a few slight differences with the description given by Tooley (i.e. the apparent lack of a river or scratch in Fousang), but in general this seems to match the 1808 issue. There are a few expert (and all but indiscernable) repairs near centerfold & a few other places, else fine. (700/1000).

North America at a time when the discoveries of the mountain men were adding to the sum of geographic knowledge of the interior, thought not all of these new facts are incorporated into the map: there is no Sierra- Nevada Range or Cascades, although there is fairly accurate depiction of many of the rivers leading to the Rocky Mountains. Old creases, else near fine. (150/250).

Melchoir engraved his new plate, closely copying Hondius' 1617 map of the same title or a version of it, around 1630, and this is the third issue of it. Describing the Hondius map, Shirley says that "Decoratively, the map is one of the most attractive. The corners contain scenes of the four seasons... On either sides of north and south celestial hemispheres are recumbent figures representing the four elements..." On this copy there is a small crack in the plate, causing a thin dark line to extend south from Tierra del Fuego. Laid on linen backing, effecting a few repairs, some smudging and soiling, else very good, a very attractive map. (5000/7000).

Shirley notes that the map "is an undisguised and skilful copy of Willem J. Blaeu's single-sheet world map of two years earlier," but goes on to declare that the "clarity and precision of Keere's engraving is in no way inferior to that of Josua van den Ende who engraved Blaeu's map." The vignettes surrounding the map include seven representations of the planets at the top, the seven wonders of the ancient world at the bottom, and anthropomorphic representions of the four elements at the left and the four seasons at the right. According to Shirley, the map has on it more legends than that of Blaeu, "the principal additions referring to explorations in the Arctic. A long note near the cartouche headed `America' queries whether the straits of Anian and Davis do in fact link up to form a north-west passage." This is the fourth state of the map, the first two having been issued by Kaerius, the third by Jansson in 1621 following his acquisition of Kaerius' plates. This undated fourth state was issued in Jansson's & Hondius' Atlantis Maioris Appendix of 1630 and 1631, and occasionally in later atlases by the partnership. ROAD MAP OF ROMAN EMPIRE

61. Ortelius, Abraham - Peutinger Table. Tabula Itineraria ex Illustrati Peutingerorum Bibliotheca Quae Augustae Vindel. Est Beneficio Marci Velseri Septemuiri Augustani in Lucem Edita. Nobilissimo Viro Marco Velsero R.P. Augustanae Septemuiro Ioannes Moretus Typographus Antverp. S.P.D. 8 sections on 4 sheets, copper-engraved. Each section approx. 19.5x52 cm.; sheets (incl. margins) approx. 46x53.5 cm. (18-1/4x21"). Antwerp: 1598. Shirley 212 & Plate 171 - Very interesting and unusual road map of the Roman Empire. Shirley describes it in much detail: "The Peutinger Table, as it is generally known, represents the imperial roads and posts throughout the Roman Empire at about 250 A.D., with some later additions up to c.500 A.D. The only surviving manuscript...is believed to have been made in Cologne in 1265.... Its name derives from Konrad Peutinger, the sixteenth century German humanist who once owned it.... The form of the map is essentially that of a practical route map in strip form. There are detailed lines of roads and staging posts with the distances between them marked, but no representations of direction. Because of this, the format of the map is unfamiliar and a certain amount of study is needed to comprehend the many interesting features...." Ortelius re-drew eight of the twelve sections of the map in 1598 (only eleven are extant), and they were printed by the firm of Moretus and published in December of that year, a few months after Ortelius' death. The map was reprinted in the Mercator-Ptolemy atlas published in Leiden in 1618-19, and also appeared in the late edition of Ortelius' Parergon in 1624. It seems that the present example is one of these later issues (Shirley refers to the original issue as rare, but the later issues are also uncommon; Shirley reproduces the re-engraved 1650 Jansson issue when illustrating the original issue), with Latin text on verso. There are a few instances of expert repairs, mostly marginal, 3rd sheet (sections 5 & 6), with some light, mostly dampstaining, neatly split 2" up lower central crease, 1st & 2nd sheets with versos expertly (and nearly invisibly) silked, 2nd sheet with right margin repaired, else in near fine condition. (4000/6000).
