A huge herd of buffalo heads straight towards the viewer, and extends back deep into the rolling hills. A very large, well executed and impressive work. Reinforced with tissue-paper backing, repairs a few marginal chips & tears, else near fine. (1000/1500).

96. (Photograph - Lotta Crabtree) Carte-de-visite photograph of the American comedienne holding a smoking cigar, hat with feather on her head. No place: c.1870. Captivating portrait of the coquettish entertainer, who was taught to dance by Lola Montez at the Grass Valley mining camp. With imprint of Gurney on reverse ("I have chained the sun to serve me"). Near fine. (100/150).
97. (Photograph - Rugby/Football) Cabinet card photograph of a painting of a scrum, onlookers standing by, American and British flags in the background. Montreal: William Notman, no date. Gripping depiction of the burly footballers; on the reverse is penciled "Montreal vs. Harvard," and the names of several of the participants are written in ink. Fine condition. (50/80).

103. (Photographs) Album of 101 photographs of the construction of Pardee Dam along the Mokelumne River drainage, creating the Comanche Resevoir & related images. 4-1/2x6-1/2 each. [California: 1927-33]. Important group of photographs showing the area before the resevoir was built, incl. the Lancha Planta dredge fields, how the dam was constructed, the Pardee work camps, and the flood of 1928 and how it affected the site. Each with precise details written in pencil to versos, and each with punchholes to left margins for binding in 2-ring binder. Fine. (300/500).

MOUNT WILSON AREA
106. (Photographs) Collection of 108 postcards of the Mt. Wilson area, mostly real-photo postcards. [Mt. Wilson: c.1900-1925]. Includes historic photos of the way-stations, the hotel & surrounding grounds, & the Mt. Wilson trail. The hotel and tourist camp were built around 1900, bringing numerous tourists to the area where the trail was built by D.B. Wilson in 1864. (600/800).
107. (Photographs) Steffans, C.W. Typed diary entitled "In the Good Old Summer Time: Touring in the Northern Counties of California. Auto Camping Deluxe...." Contains 49 photographs of the area through Weaverville, Shasta, Burney Falls, Modoc, Plumas (incl. dam sites), & Humboldt, incl. scenes of "auto camping." In black cloth ring binder. 108. (Photographs) Album containing approx. 500 mounted photographs from the Frank Werner family of property along the souther California coastal region, incl. Catalina Island (with construction of the casino at Avalon), and of the Chicago area, and several of Germany. Various places: [c.1915]. Most are very interesting, and of a pleasant-seeming family. Scenes incl. an automobile in front of Cafe Nat Goodwin, an Asian servant holding the hand of a little boy with a box of Cracker Jacks in his hand, boy swinging a baseball bat on a family outing to the woods, old automobiles, Eagle River, Wisconsin, beach scenes in So. Cal., incl. in front of the Neptune Theater at a boardwalk, picnics & walks on Catalina Island, ships in the harbor, etc. Fine. (200/300).

About 20% are photo-postcards. Various places: [1902-26]. A magnificent album containing 85 views of Yosemite, 48 of the San Francisco area, 17 in Glacier Nat'l. Park, and numerous views of Alaska, New Mexico, Colorado, Yellowstone, Arizona, 65 of the California coast, Seattle, British Columbia, etc. Photos of particular interest are: Masses of cars & people ar Easter Sunrise Sermon, Mt. Rubidoux, Riverside; various missions; Mariposa Big Trees with horse & buggy; El Capitan by F.W. Martin; Half Dome from Glacier Point; several Maybeck houses in Berkeley; West Clay Park in San Francisco; Muir Woods; American Indians, incl. many of Antelope dances in Namb‚ & Corn Dance in Santa Clara; Chinese in California; W.E. CHINA AT END OF 19TH CENTURY
111. (Photographs) Janvier, Henry. Photo album containing 135 original photographs of China (incl. duplicates), incl.: Criminals being punished; mealtime on the steamer "Shasi"; Chinese captain & pilot of houseboat on the Yangtze River, numerous sights slong the river incl. Chinese with umbrellas walking on the beach, a beggar along the banks, etc.; Plowing in rice ponds & rural scenes with peasants on the road from Wan to Chentu; houseboat used at time of high water; Palace on the water; hoisting machinery from boat to dock, machinery to be installed in the mint at Chentu, employees of the mint, with long braids, banquet given for Henry Janvier at the mint, etc. Photographs are 4x5, in period album. China: 1898. Janvier was clearly selling mint machinery to Chentu, and this album chronicles his travels through China to the town of Chentu - it contains a fascinating look at rural China in the late 19th century. 113. (Photographs - Yosemite) Three original photographs of Yosemite: a log cabin & carriage in the woods, another carriage, & a carriage driving under a big tree with center cut out. Approx. 3-3/4x4-3/4 or slightly smaller, mounted. [Yosemite: c.1880's]. Fine. (70/100).
114. (Photographs) 2 original photographs of Captain Chittenden ("Old Cappy"), [c.1886] & 1932. N.p.: [c.1886 & 1932]. Chittenden was a great sailor and worked for many years at San Francisco's Tubbs Cordage Co. First with A.L.s. from Chittenden to verso (photographs shows him at about age 44). Second inscribed & signed by "Old Cappy" on the photograph margin, with notes about him (incl. that the picture was taken in 1932, when he was 90) to verso. About fine. (70/100).

115. (Photographs) Genthe, Arnold. Original silver photograph of Bruce Porter. 4-1/4x3-1/4, mounted. [San Francisco: c.1901]. Signed by Genthe on the photograph, & inscribed & signed by Porter on the verso, dated 1901. Porter was a member of San Francisco's Le Jeunes, a friend of Frank Norris', & a contributor to the city's cultural life. He married the daughter of Will James in 1917. Minor rubbing to extremities of photograph & small scratches to plate, else near fine. (150/250).
116. (Photographs) Group of 32 original photographs & photographic postcards of California people, & also 10 copy photographs. Subjects include Ishi, a member of the Santa Barbara de la Guerra family, Rear Admiral Beardslee & ships, Marie Welsh, a trapper with his wares, Jas. W. 122. (Photography) Steckel, George (1864-1938). Scrapbook containing numerous original photographs by & of Stekel (from childhood to old age), incl. early tintypes; newspaper & magazine clippings, awards of merit, etc. of the famed Los Angeles portrait photographer. This appears to be his wife's scrapbook, as it contains clippings of the news of the photographer's death, & letters of condolence as well. [Los Angeles: 1864-1938]. A unique album, with some great early photographs, particularly the tintypes which depict groups of people. (250/400).

Group of 6 original photographs of Mexico, incl. a bullfight, Paseo de la Reforma, "A Stand in the Market" with Mexicans in traditional dress, etc. 5x8, photographer's stamp to verso. 124. (Placerville) Bird's Eye View Placerville, Cal. Published by the "Weekly Observer" 1888. Lithographed view, surrounded by 24 vignettes of scenes & buildings, text at bottom. 22-1/4x30-1/4 incl. margins. Placerville: 1888. Reps 189 - Nice bird's-eye view of the Gold Country community, with important buildings, etc., depicted around it, as well as a small view of Placerville in 1851. Silked on verso, repairing a number of small tears, etc., a few words of the text obscured by repairs, some soiling, else very good. (500/800).

Reproduction of the original lithograph, hand-colored. 8-1/4x14-1/2 plus margins, matted, framed & glazed. San Francisco: John Howell, 1935 Exellent reproduction of the original lithograph, done in lithotone by A. Carlisle & Co., successors to Britton & Rey, who produced the lithograph originally, which was drawn on stone by Kuchel & Dresel from the original drawing by Eugene Camerer (Reps 280). Fine condition. (70/100).
126. (San Francisco) Marryat, S.F. San Francisco. Reproduction of the original lithograph, hand-colored. 15x23 plus margins, matted, framed & glazed. [San Francisco: John Howell-Books, 1967]. (Reps 258) - First executed in 1851, lithographed by M. & N. Hanhart from the drawing by Marryat, the striking view shows the infant city looking north towards S.F. Bay, with many ships in the harbor. Fine condition. (70/100).

Reproduction of the original lithograph, hand-colored. 10-3/4x26 plus margins, matted, framed & glazed. San Francisco: John Howell, 1982 Fine facsmile of the original 1851 lithograph (Reps 259), which was drawn on stone by W. Boosey from a sketch by Captain Collinson, lithographed by M. & N. Hanhart, and published by Ackermann & Co., London. Fine condition. (100/150).
HUGE SUTRO BATHS POSTER
128. (Sutro Baths Poster) Very large lithographed poster advertising the baths. Printed in 16 sections, mounted on heavy linen backing with wooden rollers at top & bottom. 9 feet hight & 13-1/2 feet wide. San Francisco: c.1899-1900. Wonderful San Francisco relic, rescued from the baths before the fire destroyed the building. This is the only known complete example, as attested to by a letter from the Society of California Pioneers, in whose collection it resided before being purchased by its present owner, Stephen A. Zellerbach. The photograph in the catalogue is of a slightly different example, with variant lettering in the right hand panel, taken from San Francisciana: Photographs of the Sutro Baths, p.41 (Courtesy of Stringbox Books, San Francisco). A few minor cracks & separations, still in very good condition, fine bright colors. (2500/4000).

Lettered in green & red. Each part 28x35. [San Francisco: Sutro Baths, c.1920's]. First part with a bit of damage to upper middle (not affecting lettering), else very good & quite attractive. 130. (Sutro Baths) Black wool bathing suit with red piping from Sutro Baths, with stencilling in white across front (possibly later). Large (Size 48). [San Francisco: Sutro Baths, c.1912]. With buttonable strap & buttoned pocket. Moth hole to back, otherwise in very good condition, with original inside tags of the Sutro Baths. (150/250).

ORIGINAL DRAWINGS BY YELLAND
134. Yelland, Raymond Dabb. Original pencil drawing of Black Point, San Francisco, showing Selby's Smelting Works, the Pioneer Wooolen Mill, etc., several boats on the bay. 12-1/2x19-1/4. San Francisco: c.1873-77. Excellent drawing by this important artist. Born in England and raised in the United States, Yelland came to California in 1873 and served as the art instructor at Mills College, the California School of Design (where one of his students was William Keith), and the University of California. James Hart, in A Companion to California, notes that "like Rix, Yelland depicted all aspects of the California landscape and coasts, and was known for the atmospheric light of his scenes." This is from the collection of Joseph Armstrong Baird (author of
California Pictorial Letter Sheets). Fine condition. (400/600).
135. Yelland, Raymond Dabb. Original pencil drawing of the entrance to the Golden Gate, San Francisco Bay. 9x12-3/4, matted & framed under plexiglass. San Francisco: c.1880-90. Attractive view of the entrance to the bay with sailing ship at the center; apparently this was a preliminary sketch for a painting, with color notes penciled in at a few locations. This is from the collection of Joseph Armstrong Baird (author of California Pictorial Letter Sheets). Fine condition. (400/600).

136. (Yosemite) Chromolithograph of Yosemite Valley by Charles H. Crosby & Co. 14-1/4x20-1/4. Boston: c.1870. Striking depiction of the lush Yosemite Valley with its characteristic surroundings of El Capitan, Halfdome, Yosemite Falls, etc. With Crosby's imprint in the plate, imprint of the American and European Chromo Publishing Co., Boston, on the reverse. Fine. (500/800).
137. (Yosemite) Page from the Illustrated London Jones, with 2 wood engravings: The Yohamite Falls (Over 2700 Feet High), Mariposa County, California, and The Yohamite Valley. Both on same side of the sheet, both with modern hand coloring. Overall 14-3/4x10-1/2. London: March 26, 1859. Very nice pair of images, although the angles are perhaps even sharper than they really are. (100/150).
