CIVIL WAR

1. (Civil War) Archive of material relating to Jonathan Brownrigg, Surgeon with the forces of the Confederate States of America. Brownrigg joined the Army of Tennessee in the Spring of 1861, and was elected Surgeon of Blythe's Mississippi Battalion (?) in July of that year. He served until his discharge in the Spring of 1864. The archive consists of the following:

_Brownrigg's medical syllabus, interleaved with blank pages on which he has written copious notes relating to medical and surgical practices (nearly 40 pages of notes in all, many relating to treatment of wounds); glued over many the early printed pages (and a few holograph ones) are numerous newspaper clippings relating to medical, personal and political matters during and after the war (many being obituaries or memorials to family members); and inserted are approx. 21 official orders (some of these official copies), transferring him between various units, raising him in rank, reacting to his requests for discharge, etc. Some of these orders are on the forms and/or letterhead of the various units, some are wholly manuscript.

_Token book belonging to Bettie Yerger, whom Brownrigg married in January, 1864. Among the usual sentiments from friends, Brownrigg has written the story of their love "John Brownrigg & Bettie Yerger. Met first in Febry 1863. Plighted their troth June 25th, 1863. Engaged to be married Oct. 15, 1863. Married on January 14th, 1864, at the residence of Judge Wm. Yerger, in Jackson Mississippi... Separated by death Sep. 3d, 1867, but not in heart. I fell in love with her at first sight, at Col. Fontes house at a little evening party..." _A.L.s. to Brownrigg from Brigadier General Henry Hopkins Sibley, C.S.A., written on May 15th, 1863, from Shreveport, LA, describing the death of Major Richard T. Brownrigg, brother of Jonathan Brownrigg, at the battle of Bisland, and describing in detail the placement of R.T. Brownrigg's grave, which Jonathan Brownrigg sought out after the war, as noted in an accompanying newspaper clipping. Sibley concludes by noting that the "yankees have not advanced above Alexandria - their gun boats are some twenty miles below the river falling..."

_Lock of hair from Thomas Brownrigg, youngest brother of Jonathan Brownrigg, who served with the C.S.A. and died in 1879.

_Small Bible evidently belonging to Jonathan Brownrigg, signed later by various members of the Marshall family, to whom he was related.

_Three medical discharge forms, filled out, recommending Brownrigg be discharged from military service for reason's of "Facial Neuralgia of an aggravated type," each attached to blue paper on which comments or docketing information have been written. Dated Columbus, Mississippi, April 15, 1864.

_Special Orders form from the Headquarters, Department Ala., Miss, and E. La., relieving Brownrigg from duty as Chief Surgeon, dated May 9th, 1864.

_Special Orders form from the Adjutant and Inspector General's Office, Richmond, Va., accepting the resignation of Brownrigg, dated July 29th, 1864.

A fascinating and poignant archive, through which one may trace the military career and personal life of a surgeon in one of the most unenviable positions, serving with the Confederate forces during the War Between the States. There is rubbing & wear to the covers of the books, and the glue used in affixing the newspaper clippings in the medical syllabus has darkened and discolored, with normal wear and aging to most items as is inevitable from usage, a few pages apparently clipped out of the syllabus and token book, overall in good to very good condition, an important slice of Confederate history from the Great Rebellion. The archive has remained in the family until the present time. (5000/8000)
