188. Whitman, Walt. 1819-1892. American poet. Autograph Letter Signed in full, two pages (single leaf), octavo, Washington, 9 July 1869. He writes: þDear Mrs. Blood, I send you the picture according to promise. There is nothing very new or special at the house since you left - nor with me either. I am writing this at my desk in the Attorney Generalþs office, by a great open window, looking south, away down the Potomac, & across to Virginia, along Arlington Heights..." The writing is strong and dark. Fine condition, with original cabinet portrait photograph of Whitman. In June of 1865, Whitman was dismissed from his position as a clerk in the U.S. Dept. of the Interior by the Sec. of Interior because of the nature of his poetry as published in Leaves of Grass. He was given a clerkþs position in the Attorney Generalþs office, in which capacity the above letter was written. (2000/3000)
