199. Baer, Max. 1909-1959. American boxing champion from Livermore, California, who won the heavyweight crown by beating the Italian, Primo Carnera in 1934. The bout has been dubbed the þComedy Battle" because if its many knockdowns and tumbles. Baer dropped þSatchel Feet" Carnera eleven times before the fight was halted. Vintage black and white photograph of Baer with five others seated at a restaurant table, laughing, with drinks and cigars, oblong 8" x 10," inscribed and signed in area of the white tablecloth: þBill - Your pal always - Max baer 1935." Several creases with small pieces missing from two corners. (250/400)

204. Cleveland, Harry. Autograph letter Signed on imprinted Birmingham Press Club stationery, two pages (single leaf), 27 June 1925. To Arthur Lumley. He writes of how he started his first publication The Sportsman in 1882 with a lot of þtough work reporting prize fights with bare knuckles, cockfights, etc." He also mentions his book Fisticuffs. 205. Cobb, Ty. 1886-1961. The þGeorgia Peach." Considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Printed bank check completed in his hand and signed þTyrus R. Cobb," First National Bank of Nevada, Reno, 17 July 1946. Payable to Fred O. Foster Co., San Francisco for $136.61. Cancellation perforations at center not touching Cobbþs signature. 206. Corbett, James J. 1866-1933. American boxing champion. Won the worldþs championship by knocking out John L. Sullivan in the 21st round in New Orleans on September 7, 1891. Vintage sepia photograph of Corbett at the wheel of his car with five other men, oblong 8" x 10," inscribed and signed to San Francisco city official Dan Leary: þTo my old friend Dan Leary from your friend - Jas. Inscribed and signed to a fellow boxer on front free endpaper: þTo my pal, Abe Attell, a great champ - when they made you Abe they broke the mold - lots of luck - Jack Dempsey - 5/17/60." Abe Attell was a prominent featherweight champion at the turn of the century. Self-declared successor to Young Corbett, Attell known as the þLittle Hebrew" fought many successful fifteen and twenty round fights. Very good condition with original dust jacket. (200/300)

Best wishes, Joe - 2/2/49.þ Page 194 is the first page of his chapter on þSlumps" and recounts a time when Oþdoul was in a slump and went hitless for 32 times at bat. þWhen he finally got a hit he knelt down at first base and kissed the canvas bag..." 216. Fleischer, Nat. 1887-1972 President and editor of The Ring magazine, author of books on boxing. Two Typed Letters Signed on imprinted stationery of The Ring, one page, quarto, New York, 19 April 1935 and 16 November 1936. Both to Arthur Lumly. Fleischer writes to the aging Lumly asking that he send books that he may not want and says: þ...I will be able to put thru a little check for you thru The Ring account..." Very good condition. 217. Jeffries, James J. 1875-1953. American prizefighter and heavyweight champion. Defeated by Jack Johnson in Reno, Nevada on July 4, 1910. Printed Certificate of Victory presented by Jeffries Barn Boxing School, one page, quarto, 18 October 1934 to Carvil Tullio certifying that he defeated Lou Leyva in an amateur boxing bout by þKO 1sr Round." Certificate features printed portraits of Jim Jeffries, George Blake, instructor, Dr. Harry Martin, chairman of the Boxing Commission and W. C. Fields, sponsor. Signed by Jeffries by his portrait. 220. [Oldfield, Barney]. 1878-1946. American automobile racer. Lot of five original photographs of Oldfield with his famous þGreen Dragon" racer, racing against Louis Chevrolet in 1905, with W. K. Vanderbilt after Oldfield defeated him for the one mile world championship, driving with Milwaukee mayor Kid Becker and a three-quarter length portrait. Some tears and wear. 222. Reynolds, George. American skin glove fighter born in 1866. Typed Document Signed, one page, quarto, no date. Typewritten biographical history of his career on boxing. In part: þStarted as a professional boxer at the age of 23 as a skin glove fighter to a finish...In all my career I was knocked out only once and that was June 1894 at Coney Island Athletic club by the Brumel, Mike Leonard in the 9th round..." Typed letter Signed in full on his official crested stationery, one page oblong quarto, 3 February 1966. To John E. Boos. He writes: þ...I am returning to you the portrait you sent me of the late President Kennedy. Beneath it I have written a brief thought..." Fine. _ Printed black and white profile portrait of JFK, 6.%" x 9," with the following inscription by Cushing: þJohn F. Kennedy fought the good fight for the God-given rights of his fellow man and for a world where peace and freedom shall prevail. He fulfilled unto death the pledge he made on the day of his inauguration as the 35th President of the United States of America. Richard Cardinal Cushing.þ Fine. 233. Doenitz, Karl. 1891-1980. German admiral. In 1945 he briefly succeeded Adolf Hitler as Chancellor before presiding over Germanyþs unconditional surrender to the Allies. Typewritten Document Signed in full, one page, quarto, no date. Twelve line excerpt from an address he delivered to the German people at Flensburg. In part: þComrades...We have been set back for a thousand years in our history. Land that was German for a thousand years has now fallen into Russian hands..." Very good condition. (200/300)

234. Doolittle, James. American aviator and army officer. Led bombing raid over Tokyo during World War II. Collection of 62 Typed Letters Signed on his imprinted personal stationery, each one page, octavo, 1983-1988, with original envelopes. To Mr. Scott Galloway. Some letters with good content, several mentioning the Tokyo Raiders. On September 18, 1986 Doolittle writes: þIn WWI I flew planes that had machine guns that fired through the propeller disc. A synchronized device - which didnþt always work...Bullets occasionally got out of sync and did hit the prop. They made a hole, or occasionally made a prompt landing mandatory." On April 16, 1986 he writes: þ...My B-25 did not have a name. Some of the other pilots, on the mission, named their planes but I did not. Quite often the airplane was named after a sweetheart or, if the pilot was married, his wife." In another he writes: þ...General Mitchell and General Arnold were both great leaders. General Arnold was the more patient of the two." Accompanied by three signed Christmas cards. Excellent condition. (2500/3500)

235. Gibbons, Floyd P. 1887-1939. American war correspondent for Chicago Tribune who was with Villa in Mexican Revolution in 1915. Was on torpedoed liner Laconia when sunk, 25 February 1917. After his rescue he cabled his account of the disaster. Lost an eye in the battle of Chateau-Thierry while serving as a war correspondent in France in 1918. Black and white portrait photograph, full length pose in uniform, with eye patch, 7.5" x 9," inscribed and signed: þMajor Story, Sincerely - Floyd Gibbons - yours for war." Corners trimmed. 236. MacArthur, Douglas. 1880-1964. American army officer. Autograph Letter Signed in full as Superintendent of West Point written on blindstamped and imprinted United states Military academy stationery, three pages (separate leaves), octavo, no date. To Col. Little. In part: þ...I am delighted you contemplate coming to the Point...I will immediately put John Starkþs case before the Academic Board. I have talked with the individual members about it but am somewhat dubious of a favorable report. In such matters the Board is, as you know, beyond the scope of my authority..." 238. MacArthur, Douglas. Typed Letter Signed þMacArthur" on imprinted General Headquarters - Southwest Pacific Area - Office of the Commander-in-Chief stationery, one page, quarto, 18 May 1944. To Major General Innis P. Swift, Commanding General, 1st Cavalry Division. þI intend to shortly constitute the X Corps in this area and will assign you as its commander. the Corps is at present in the United States and its staff will be sent here very shortly. Please regard this information as confidential until you receive it through official channels. I am confident that you will render the same splendid service as the Corps Commander that has so markedly distinguished you as the Commanding General of the 1st Cavalry Division." Lengthy and detailed letter about the USS Baton Rouge upon which he is returning from the ships first sea trials: þ...The ship complete all tests including full power operation, both surfaced and submerged..." 247. Rickover, Hyman. Typed Letter Signed þH.G. Rickover" on imprinted Atomic Energy Commission stationery, Washington, 17 September 1974. To Congressman Bob Wilson. Lengthy, detailed letter in which he discusses þthe application of nuclear propulsion plants to small and less expensive naval ships and to merchant ships..." He also mentions on-going experiments in nuclear power and experiments conducted on the USS Seawolf and the USS Nautilus. Fine condition. (250/350)

248. Somerville, Sir James F. 1882-1949. British Admiral. Led Force H, including the carrier Ark Royal, against the German battleship Bismarck, and made a major contribution to sinking the ship in May 1941. Appointed commander in chief of the Eastern Fleet in 1942. Typed Letter Signed to the Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Pearl Harbour, on embossed official stationery, one page, quarto, Eastern Fleet, 12 April 1944. He forwards information on Captain C. L. Green, U. S. Naval Liason Officer of the Eastern Fleet. Two file holes and pin holes in upper blank margin. Pencil filing notations in lower margin. Conant, F.A.I. license No. 176, oblong 4" x 5," with portrait photograph of the pilot affixed in upper right, signed by Wright as Contest Committee Chairman. Also signed by licensee. 251. Yamashita, Tomoyuki. 1885-1946. Japanese Lieutenant. Known as the þTiger of Malaya" for his capture of Malaya and Singapore, which Churchill described as the worst British military disaster in history. Tried as a war criminal and hanged. 252. [African-American History]. Blanche K. Bruce. 1941-1898. Born a slave in Virginia, Bruce was elected as Republican Senator from Mississippi, serving from 1875-1881. The only African-American to serve a full term in the United States Senate until Edward Brooke, Republican from Massachusetts, in 1966. Scarce Partly- printed Document Signed as Recorder of Deeds for the District of Columbia, one page, octavo, 8 July 1890. Very good condition. (500/700)

253. Arthur, Chester A. 1829-1886. Twenty-first President of the United States. Magnificent partly-printed Document Signed as President, one page, large oblong folio, Washington, 9 May 1883. Appointment of George Gifford of Maine as United States Consul in Cognac, France. With intact white paper wafer seal affixed in lower left. Fine condition with an excellent signature of Arthur. Ornately printed Bill of Fare for a dinner honoring Douglas hosted þBy his friends and fellow-citizens of the City of Chicago, Thursday Evening, November 9, 1854." Printed by Ben. W. Saton. As U.S. Senator, in 1854, Douglas drafted the Kansas-Nebraska Bill which left the decision as to slavery up to the territories themselves and thus caused bitter struggles there. Very good condition. 263. Garfield, James A. 1831-1881. Twentieth President of the U.S. Assassinated. Autograph album, 7" x 9," containing a large, dark signature of Garfield as President: þJames A. Garfield - May 6, 1881." as well as several members of his cabinet, including: Robert T. Lincoln, James G. Blaine, and vice president Chester A. Arthur. The album also includes several dozen signatures of members of Congress and dignitaries, among them a future president, former Union and Confederate generals and the vice president of the Confederacy: Benjamin Harrison, L. Q. C. Lamar, W. S. Rosecrans, Ambrose Burnside, M. C. Butler, Z. B. Vance, David Davis, and Alexander H.Stephens. The signatures of Garfield and his cabinet are all on separate leaves. Album partially disbound, with cover in poor condition. Interior pages fine. Rare as Garfield only served as President for four months, being assassinated by Charles Guiteau on July 2, 1881. In full: þWilliam Helmick Esq. will act as Commissioner of Pensions during the absence of that officer from the seat of government.þ With integral leaf. Paper tape repairs on verso of two fold breaks in right margin, minor wear, otherwise very good. At the same cabinet meeting on November 1, 1861, Lincoln accepted the resignation of General Winfield Scott and decided upon General McClellan as his successor, later that day he informed McClellan: þI have designated you to command the whole army." To Mr. Clyde Balsley thanking him for his expression of sympathy on the loss Hall Roosevelt, who was an aviator in World War I. Clyde Balsley was one of the select few Americans who flew for France in the years before the U.S. entered World War I. Balsley was one other the initial members of the Lafayette Escadrille and was the first American aviator to be seriously wounded. Light age toning. With original White House envelope.
