621. Adams, Charles. Brentwood Street. San Francisco Series. Signed l/l Charles Adams. Color lithograph. 13-3/4x10-3/4 inches. Matted. Limited edition lithograph, 158/500 by a San Francisco artist with a unique style. Included with this item is a fascinating autobiographical book entitled Things Called Miracles by the artist/author [fine, signed first edition in dust jacket]. 622. Alten, Mathias. 1871 - 1938. Watchful Waiting. Signed l/r M. Alten. Oil on canvas. 24x30 inches. Framed. Mathias Alten was born in Germany in 1871. He emigrated to the United States at the age of 17 and settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he was employed in a variety of jobs including painting furniture for one of the local furniture manufacturers until he took up art seriously in 1898. Eventually he traveled widely for scenes to stimulate his talent. His travels included New Mexico, California and Europe among other locations. This painting was made on a Taos trip in 1927 at the time that Taos was an American art and cultural center under the influence of D. H. Lawrence. Despite his extensive travels, Alten continued to make Grand Rapids his home. He eventually became the leading artist of western Michigan and was sought after for portraiture as well as for his scenic canvasses. The Grand Rapids Art Museum is developing a major archive on this artist and planning a retrospective exhibition of his work in 1998. Fine condition. (6000/10,000).

623. Ball, Steven Louis. Hawk. Signed l/r Steven Louis Ball. Acrylic on paper. 27x22 inches. Matted glazed and framed. Steven Ball is best known for his portrayal of California wildlife and rural scenes. He lives in remote foothills of the Sierra where birds [including red tailed hawks as in this painting] and deer enliven his life and stimulate his palette. His etchings, which are produced entirely by his own hand, have had world-wide distribution through Highland International Artists. I became acquainted with Steven and his work through his brother Craig who was an intern in our hospital and who is now an ENT specialist in Southern California. Fine condition. (800/1200).

628. Bierstadt, Albert. View of the Valley from Yosemite Falls. Signed in the print l/r A. Bierstadt. Contemporary chromolithograph on heavy rag paper from an original oil painting by Bierstadt. 21x32 inches. Matted and framed. T. J. Dillmann was the lithographer and Oeldruck v. Breidenbach and Co. in Dusseldorf was the publisher - circa 1868 [the painting was made in 1867]. Sixteen color impressions were used in the production of this lithograph and the color samples are displayed on the paper below the image. The original oil painting and this chromolithograph are depicted in Figures 122 and 121 respectively in Gordon Hendricks Albert Bierstadt, Painter of the American West [see item #567]. Fine condition. (3000/5000).

629. Borein, Edward. 1873 - 1945. "Caught Him". Signed l/r Edward Borein. Drypoint. 6x4 1/8 inches, matted, glazed and framed. Although this is titled "Caught Him" on the print, in Galvin's Etchings of Edward Borein, it is titled "A Tight Rope". Galvin # 132. Fine condition. (800/1200).

630. Borein, Edward. Going to the Dance. Signed l/r Edward Borein. Etching. 5-3/4x7 inches, matted, glazed and framed. Galvin #154. Fine condition. (800/1200).

631.Brumley, Joan. Bridalveil Falls. Signed l/r Joan Brumley. Watercolor on paper. 7x10 inches, matted, glazed and framed. Joan Brumley was a special cardiac procedures nurse at Valley Medical Center in Fresno when I first became acquainted with her. Later, she developed a second career as a watercolor artist and established her own gallery in Oakhurst and now Coarsegold. An exceptionally good nurse, Joan turned out to be as good at painting as she was at nursing. She has recently been honored by an exhibit of her watercolors at the William Saroyan Theatre in Fresno and is listed in Who's Who of American Women. Fine condition. (150/250).

632. Brumley, Joan. Chilnualna Falls. Signed l/r Joan Brumley. Watercolor on paper. 28x13 inches, matted, glazed and framed. Fine condition. (300/500).

634. Burnham, Jane. Valley Homestead. Signed l/l Burnham. Watercolor on paper/ 18x28 inches. Matted, glazed and framed. Fine condition. (400/700).

635. Dixon, Maynard. 1875 - 1946. Cowboy Roping, P. Ranch, Oregon, 1910. Unsigned except for the Maynard Dixon logo - with a certificate of authenticity signed by his wife, Edith Hamlin [Dixon] pasted on the back of the mount. Pencil drawing on paper. 5-3/4x4 inches, mounted on board and matted. Although Maynard Dixon became one of the best known artists of the southwestern desert in his lifetime, it is often forgotten that he was a native of Fresno and started sketching and drawing as a student in the Fresno schools. After a brief attempt at formal art education in San Francisco at the age of 16, he abandoned art and led the life of a cowboy in the southwest for several years. By 1910, when he made this drawing, he had returned to art, had a studio in San Francisco and was well established as an illustrator. It was here that he also began the painting of southwestern scenes in oil that was to bring him national recognition. Fine condition. (1000/1500).

636. Earle, Eyvind. 1916- . Valley. Signed l/r on mount Eyvind Earle. Serigraph. 8x10 inches, matted glazed and framed. Former Disney artist Eyvind Earle developed a "graphic-design" art style that is unique and instantly recognizable. Earle had his first one-man show in New York City at the age of 21. Every painting sold. By the age of twenty-three he had two more one-man shows in New York City and one of his paintings was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum. Since then he has worked for Disney Studios, produced his own animation films, designed several hundred Christmas cards for the American Artists Group, served as illustrator for many books, magazines and continued to paint. Much of his work is now done with silk-screen production of serigraph prints as illustrated by this item. Fine condition. (300/500).

Oversize painting of Yosemite Valley

637. Englehart, John. Yosemite Valley. Signed l/l J. Englehart. Oil on canvas. 69x42 inches. Framed. Dramatic painting of Yosemite Valley from the descent into the valley from Inspiration Point. This artist's paintings are better known, than the artist. Although he was exhibited in the 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition in Portland and his work is represented in the Oakland Museum, Society of California Pioneers, Washington State Historical Society and others, little is known about him. His life deserves further research by a student of art history [see Hughes, Artists in California, 1786-1940, San Francisco, 1986]. The painting probably dates to the 1890s. When I bought this painting at auction many years ago it was not very impressive because the varnish used over the paint had turned dull with age. I had the painting professionally restored and it came alive with color. There is inconspicuous cracking of the paint - now preserved with state-of- the-art chemistry. (4000/6000).

638. Glen, Bruce. Afternoon Sunlight. Signed l/l Bruce Glen. Egg tempera on board. 18x24 inches. Matted and framed. Bruce Glen is an English artist who found a home and nostalgic scenes fit for his egg tempera technique on the western side of the Sierra. He has been prominently featured in Carmel and Pasadena galleries. Fine condition. (1500/2500).

639. Guynes, M. 1948 - . Desert Palette. Signed l/r M. Guynes. Watercolor on paper. 20-1/2x28-1/2 inches. Matted glazed and framed. I discovered this artist several years ago in a booth at the local Farmer's market when he was just starting to sell his work. His talent was very evident and I purchased one of his paintings. Since then his popularity has exploded and his paintings sell almost as fast as he can produce them. He now has his own studio and gallery and this year the art columnist of the local newspaper quoted an international expert to say that he belongs among the top watercolor artists in the United States. Fine condition. (300/500).

640. Guynes, M. Fall Extravaganza. Signed l/l M. Guynes. Watercolor on paper. 20-1/2x28-1/2 inches. Matted glazed and framed. Fine condition. (300/500).

Original Thomas Hill oil painting of Yosemite

646. Hill, Thomas. 1829-1908. Vernal Falls, Yosemite. Signed l/r T. Hill. Oil on canvas. 30x20 inches. Framed. Thomas Hill hardly needs any introduction. He began his art career in the east where his circle of artist friends included such greats as Albert Bierstadt and Virgil Williams. In 1861 he migrated to California via the overland route and first visited Yosemite with William Keith and Virgil Williams in 1862. Much later he settled at Wawona and became the most famous resident artist of Yosemite. Fine condition. (15,000/25,000).

Rare Thomas Hill chromolithograph on canvas

647. [Hill, Thomas] 1829-1909 Yosemite Valley after Thomas Hill's Celebrated Painting. Prang chromolithograph on canvas. 15-1/2x26 inches. Framed. The original oil painting on which this chromolithograph was based was huge. It sold in Boston in the 1860s for $5,000, a kingly price for a new painting at that time [roughly equivalent to $500,000 today]. Most of the chromolithographs of this painting were printed on paper. Only a few were printed on canvas. Several tears of canvas professionally repaired - otherwise in very good condition. (1000/1500).

648. Jewell, Bill. Morning Color, Emerald Bay. Signed l/l Bill Jewell to Roger Larson, Best Wishes. Limited edition lithograph print # 248/500. 18x24 inches. Edge mounted and matted. Fine condition. (200/300).

649. Killion, Tom. 1953 - . The City from Angel Island. Signed l/r Tom Killion. Woodblock print on paper. 16-3/4x12-3/4 inches. Limited edition print 18/100. Tom Killion is a graduate of the art program at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He has worked largely in the area of wood or linoleum block prints. Personally, having spent a year in Japan where I developed an appreciation [and a small collection] of Japanese wood block prints, I was immediately attracted to Tom Killion's products. The influence of the Japanese wood block tradition was readily apparent in his work. I was impressed enough to ask him to design my bookplate, a copy of which will be included with this print. [See items # 589-590 for books by Tom Killion]. Fine condition. (100/150).

656. Musselman, Darwin. Off the Point. Signed l/r Darwin Musselman. Oil on canvas. 40x60 inches. Framed. Fine condition. (4000/6000).

658. Price, Don. Gold Miners of '49. Signed l/r Don Price. Oil on canvas. 24x48 inches. Framed. Don Price is another valley artist discovered by this collector when he first started selling his paintings at sidewalk sales many years ago. Since then Don has become one of the most popular of valley artists winning many prizes and selling his paintings almost as fast as he can produce them. He especially enjoys producing large canvasses and recently completed a magnificant wall- size oil painting of Yosemite that graces the new state archival center in Sacramento. (2000/3000).

Del Slater

Del Slater is 82 years old and still painting in his home studio in the foothills of the Sierra. Not so remarkable - until you learn that Del Slater has suffered from progressive muscular dystrophy since the age of 18. Self-taught, he has become a popular valley artist, a winner of numerous art awards, and an esteemed teacher of other artists. The lives of Del Slater and his equally remarkable wife, Bea, have been an inspiration to Frances and me and to many others in the Valley.

Clayton Turner

Clayton Turner is a nationally acclaimed western artist who also happens to be a quadriplegic. A diving accident in the Valley at the age of 15 permanently damaged his spinal cord and left him paralyzed below his neck. It wasn't long, however, until he was holding a pen in his teeth and learning to write with his head. Drawing came next. His talent in art was a natural one and it wasn't long before he received encouragment and recognition for his work. Gerald Haslam used his drawings to illustrate California Heartland [see item # 90]. Many famous people admired and purchased his art including John Wayne and Ronald Reagan. In 1978 he received a life achievment award from the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles. Now 62 years old, Clayton still lives, draws and paints in Fresno - a true living portrait in courage.
