San Francisco: Sierra Club, 1926-1950. Weston Naef somehow overlooked Ansel Adams photographic illustrations in early issues of the Sierra Club Bulletin as well as Taylor's Lights and Shadows [see next item] when he made the statement that Ansel Adams had no photographs published before his Parmelian Prints [1927]. Ansel's first published photographs were in a 1922 Sierra Club Bulletin and he became a frequent contributor for many years as indicated by this collection. All very good or better condition. (250/400).
748. [Adams, Ansel] Taylor, Katherine Ames. Lights and Shadows of Yosemite. Being a Collection of Favorite Views, Together with a Brief Account of Its History and Legends, for Those Who Want to Know and Enjoy Yosemite More. [5], 6-87 pp. Illustrated with forty plates from photographs by various photographers. Ansel Adams is identified as the photographer in three plates, Best Studio is identified as the source of ten more [almost certainly Ansel Adams photographs] and six plates are attributed to another well-known Yosemite photographer, Arthur Pillsbury. 8-1/4x6, cloth-backed decorated boards with spine title printed in brown. First edition. San Francisco: H. S. Crocker Company, Inc. [1926]. This is the first book with illustrations made from Ansel Adams photographs. This was missed by Weston Naef when he stated in his afterword to the 1977 facsimile Taos Pueblo reproduction that Ansel Adams had no photographs published before the Parmelian Prints [issued in 1927]. Perhaps, Ansel Adams would have just as soon had these forgotten as the quality of the plates is not even close to that found in his later publications. This book is of importance, however, in showing his rapid evolution into a sophisticated photographer, who was also knowledgeable and particular about the methods for reproduction of his photographs. Fine condition. (80/120).
749. [Adams, Ansel] Taylor, Katherine Ames. Yosemite Tales and Trails. Crocker Co., Inc., 1934. Signed by Ansel Adams underneath the acknowledgement of the photographer. Eight years after Taylor's first book with a few of the illustrations made from Adams photographs, he had sufficiently established himself to become the sole illustrator of this book by Taylor in which the quality of the plates is noticeably better. Two years later he was to have an exhibit of his photographs at the New York gallery of famed American photographer, Alfred Stieglitz which would boost his promising career into orbit. An early and very rare Ansel Adams item. Light scuffing of covers and modest fading of spine - otherwise in near-fine condition. (100/150).
