504. Powell, Lawrence Clark. Philosopher Pickett. The Life and Writings of Charles Edward Pickett, Esq. of Virginia, Who Came Overland to the Pacific Coast in 1842-43 and for Forty Years Waged War with Pen and Pamphlet against All Manner of Public Abuses in Oregon and California; Including also Unpublished Letters Written by Him from Yerba Buena at the Time of the Conquest of California by the United States in 1846-47. [6], vii-xv, [1], 178 pp. Illustrated with three inserted plates and one facsimile in the text. 7-1/2x5, red cloth with gilt spine title and ornaments, printed dust jacket. First edition. Berkeley and Los Angeles: University of California Press, 1942. Signed by Powell on front free endpaper. Powell's third book - adequately summarized in the title. Powell and Pickett had more in common than the first letter of their surnames. They shared an irrepressible sense of freedom and a desire to express their sentiments in writing. Included with this book is an original Pickett pamphlet entitled Address of Charles Pickett to the California Legislature upon the Government Fee in the Public Domain - Intercommunication and Land Monopolies and Correlative Topics. Faint inscription to a Judge by the "author" in pencil in the top margin of the title page as well as a penciled correction in the text in the same hand. [This pamphlet is the first item in Powell's bibliographic list of Pickett's publications]. Pamphlet in very good condition. Powell's book in fine condition. (100/150).

505. Powell, Lawrence Clark. The Poet and the Professor. [25] pp. 8-1/4x5-1/2, cloth- backed decorated boards with gilt spine title. Limited edition printed by Richard J. Hoffman in Van Nuys and bound by Bela Blau. n the title page. This is a biographical sketch of Powell's father in the form of a novel. In this novel the son is searching out the truth about his father's life while living out, in his own life, much of what he eventually learns about his father [supportive of the genetic inheritance of character traits (?)]. The information about his father is factual with perhaps just a little conjecture. The son, however, is a fictitious but thinly disguised Lawrence Clark Powell. Once again we are left to guess how much of it is true to his life and how much pure fiction. Fine condition. (50/80).

506.

507. Powell, Lawrence Clark. Remembering Henry Miller. [2], 117-128 pp. 8-1/2x5-1/2, stapled leaflet with photocopy cover from holograph title page by Lawrence Clark Powell. Santa Barbara: Capra Press, 1979. Signed by the author on the limitation page. The author's second novel. In addition to the common theme of sexual attraction and fulfillment established in the five stories of The Blue Train this novella adds some new twists of fatalism, environmentalism, witchcraft, and violence - all embedded in a poetic prose, stunningly descriptive of landscape and lives. The human themes are faintly reminiscent of Jeffers and Steinbeck. Fine condition. (100/150).

509. Powell, Lawrence Clark. The Road to Swarthmoor. [8], 13, [4] pp. One illustration from a photograph. 9-1/4x6, tan wrappers with paper cover label. Tucson: [Privately printed], 1996. This is the latest autobiographical chapter in Larry's life. It is dedicated to Betty [Fielden], a charming widow and long-time Powell fan from England who has become the companion needed to ignite Larry's spirit after the death of Fay. Betty is of Quaker roots like Larry and this essay tells the story of their recent travel to the historical sites of Quaker origin in England and Larry's rediscovery of the elements of his Quaker faith. It was distributed to friends on Larry's 90th birthday. Fine condition. (50/80).

Larry worked as a shipping clerk at Vroman's from 1929-1930, between his graduation from Occidental College and work on his Ph.D. in France. He found the large assortment of books there too much of a temptation and spent more time reading the books than packing and unpacking them. Introductions, Forewords and Prefaces by Lawrence Clark Powell

As the acknowledged "dean" of California and Southwestern literature, Lawrence Clark Powell is constantly petitioned to write forewords, introductions and prefaces for contemporary publications. So in addition to being a popular professor he could be said to be a popular "prefacer" as well. The following are just a small sampling.
