admitted to one of the schools of medicine in that place. I never made direct
application to any of the colleges for admission. I was aware that no colored
young man had ever graduated from any of them as such...I went...to see Dr.
Delafield, the Prest. of the Faculty of the College of Physicians &
Surgeons...the gist of it was: that this was something which never had been
allowed before, that the college depended upon the income from the students for
its support that in the great rivalry then existing between the N.Y. colleges
that the one which took the initiating step in this matter would lose the
southern students...that the Irish element in the city might rise in rebellion
against any such thing... He writes of the reluctance of several doctors
to help him in getting into a college, fearing for their reputations, and
closes, saying: ...I hope soon to be settled down & to get
my diploma from a school which stands among the first in the world & no thanks
to the N.Y. doctors, but if you can cut them in your own inimitable style so

LOG BOOK OF UNION BLOCKADER
IN THE CIVIL WAR
68. [Civil War Log Book] Original manuscript log book of the U.S.S. Lancaster,
which sailed up and down the west coast of North and South America during 1862
and 1863, kept by her Captain, Charles C. Johnson. Approx. 108 pp. are written
on, with blank leaves at end. The leaves are standard logbook forms, with
spaces for the hours traveled, the speed, depth, courses, remarks, etc. 15¾x10,
original leather-backed covers covered with contemporay cloth. A fascinating
day-by-day record of a U.S. warship during the Civil War, on blockade duties
and other related activities. The log begins Monday, July 26, 1862, somewhere
off the coast of Baja California, from where the ship proceeds south, making
stops along the coast of Mexico, Central American and South America, reaching
as far south as Valparaiso, Chile, before heading north again, finally winding
up in San Francisco. The flavor and character of seafaring during the
mid-nineteenth century are revealed in the day-by-day observations and
occurrences which at sea, and much of human nature spills forth while in the
hot-blooded ports of Central America. Some of the most intereresting accounts
relate to disciplinary problems and the threat of desertion. At Callao, Peru,
the morning began "at 5 a.m. called all hands and washed clothes, at 5:30
commenced firing a morning 15 minutes guns for the President of Peru and
scrubbed down the decks at 9 a.m...." But after several days in the port, the
crew got restless, and the captain "confined John Walsh...for leaving the boat
without permission in the sweat box for 5 days on breat and water," and the
next day "confined David Cady for skulking & John Tracy for drunkeness and some
of the boats crew...." Several days later more of the same, "confined David H.
Cady fireman in double irons for having whiskey on board and threating [sic]
the master at arms and insulting the Commodore...." He was eventually court
martialed and sentenced to thirty days in solitary and loss of a month's pay.
As disciplinary problems continued, the work on the ship intensified, as decks
were scrubbed, sails mended, coal tar applied, rigging flemished, etc etc.
There were stops at Acapulco, Magdalen Bay, Panama, and elsewhere. Much detail
is given on the actual sailing, when sails were set, reefed, course changes,
and other indicentals of operating a large ship. Finally, on September 14,
1863, San Francisco is reached. Daily entries continue until November 6th.
Other sources indicate that the crew members, wearying of the endless
discipline, confinements and repetitive tasks, had, upon being ordered to sea
once more, chose to stay in sunny California, and mutinied. Regardless of this
dramatic end to the Lancaster's service in the Civil War, the logbook presents
a vivid picture of life at sea in Lincoln's navy, from the mundane everyday
occurrences to the most sensational events. Wear to covers with old paper
remnants; otherwise in very good or better condition, very legible, and highly
readable. (1200/1800)
