94. [Civil War - Missouri 3rd Cavalry]. Major William Jackson. Extensive
archive of letters, documents, cards, photographs, etc. covering most of his
life, including many good war dated letters and some post war letters relating
to his claims on the U.S. government for his property losses including a burned
barn and a horse. The claim was eventually paid by Congress. In a 1906 letter
from a Missouri attorney he is told that the government made no provisions to
pay for the slaves which he bought during the war and enlisted in the Union
army and his claim will be of no value. Fascinating collection of 100+ items,
1850s to 1910, in generally very good condition. (1000/1500)

96. [Civil War - Post-War Political Letter - 1865]. Autograph Letter Signed by
a man named Richard, four pages, quarto, Chicago, 11 December 1865. Wonderful
patriotic content letter to his father. In part: ...men who
have attempted to commit murder, who have been arrested in the act, and thus
pardoned cannot be said to have a due sense of benefits received, when they
remember only the failure of their accursed design...the better class of
Kentuckians have so far fell from their once high state...this lack of brains
is confined to Copperheads and no one ever imagined a copper vessel to contain
any brains better than calfs at best. As for the now defunct new school
democratic party...lack of principles...causing a stink, anything so rotten
before burial would certainly stink if the dirt were removed...WE have a large
public debt on our hands now...we paid for the maintenance of this great
republic...when we compare the money spent with the benefits purchased, have we
no reason to rejoice?...what have we in return for the thousands of brave and
noble men that have died, for the hearst that have been broken, for the tears
of our widows...we have our country our free institutions...let England and
France add that up in their mental arithmetic... Fine. (200/300)

REMARKABLE NAVY OFFICER'S ARCHIVE
98. [Civil War - Union Navy]. Horatio Loomis Wait. 1836-19. Union Lt.
Commander, served under Dupont and Farragut in blockading Savannah, Pensacola
and Mobile, and later on Admiral Dahlgren's flagship at the bombardment of Fort
Sumter, participated in the seige and reoccupation of Charleston and the
re-hoisting of the old flag on Fort Sumter by Robert Anderson. Extensive Wait
family archive of letters, documents, photographs, paintings, genealogical
materials, etc. Including eleven war dated Autograph Letters from Wait to his
wife, 48 pages, quarto, 5 January 1863 to 9 March 1865, written on board the
Flag Ship Philadelphia, several with good navy content and throughout he is
continually coaxing her to be more explicit in her affections for him. Over 40
post-war dated Autograph Letters from his service in the Mediterranean, many
with good content. Numerous original colored sketches of children and family
scenes. Ten vintage sepia photographs of various iron-clad, steam and sailing
ships, 3 x 4, to 8 x 10. Three detailed colored
drawings of U.S. navy ships. Numerous photographs of various sizes of Wait and
family members, many of him in uniform, including one full-length pose in dress
uniform, sepia, 9 x 18. One original watercolor, 9.5 x
13, of the U.S.S. Constellation. One detailed original watercolor of two
soldiers standing in front of a burned out church. Approximately sixteen
photographs of Wait and other family members, in original ornate cases. Many
related documents, photographs, clippings, cards, etc. All in very good to fine
condition. A good collection of particularly high quality and diversity.

Letter Signed Mr. Coleridge in text, third person,
one page, octavo, 27 December 1818, to Mr.. Lackington, Esq., Highgate. He
writes: Mr. Coleridge presents his respectful compliments to
Mr. Lackington and encouraged by his former kindness takes the liberty of
requesting the loan (for a short period, during his lectures, not exceeding a
fortnight) of any editions of Diogenes Lacutus, Sextus Empiricus, and
Aristotle. If Mr. C. does not return them within the time assigned he will
purchase them - but if it be practicable, he would be happy to have them by

Exceedingly rare Typed Document Signed, one page, quarto, Plymouth, New
Hampshire, 3 August 1923. Typed heading Copy at top,
followed by the signed statement of John C. Coolidge, Calvin's father, as
Notary Public which reads: At Plymouth, in said county, on
the 3rd day of August, A.D. 1923, at two o'clock and forty seven minutes A.M.,
then appeared Calvin Coolidge, Vice President of the United States of America,
and took and subscribed the following oath of office: I do solemnly swear that
I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and
will to the best of my ability. preserve, protect and defend the Constitution
of the United States. - Before me - John C. Coolidge - Notary Public - My
commission expires February 10th, A.D., 1925. John Coolidge's embossed
Notary seal appears distinctly in lower left margin, beneath which again
appears the presidential oath of office signed in full by Calvin Coolidge:

1961. In the closing hours of his administration, Eisenhower writes to Bob Gros
to thank him for his devotion and help and writes: ...that a
number of highly important tasks were successfully completed in an earlier
period of this Administration that have not always received the attention they
should have. A good example is the work you undertook in reorganizing the
American Council on NATO in 1956...it is just such example that help me leave
office with unshaken confidence in the nation's future... JFK was sworn

Stoughton: My mother's illness has made it impossible for
her to see any letters or even her friends who may call, but your kindness is
fully appreciated by my father and the family...The President sends his regards
and thanks to yourself and husband... With sepia cabinet photograph of
Henry Garfield. Just six weeks after this letter was written President Garfield
would be assassinated by Charles Guiteau in the Baltimore and Potomac railroad

thirteen Autograph Letters written by a young military man to his wife in
Virginia, 54 pages total, 1926-27. Interesting content on the voyage from San
Francisco, daily life in Hawaii and his bigoted view of the inhabitants: ...Honestly - California and Florida with their flowers and trees
are drab and colorless to this place. But it is not truly a white man's country
and I'd never want to live here permanently. The tragedy of racial mixtures is
always before you and is infinitely sad... Very good condition, with
