182. [Jackson, Andrew, War with Mexico, etc.]. Autograph Letter by Georhe H. Marble, three pages, quarto, Natchez, Mississippi, 28 December 1835. He describes his arrival by ship in New Orleans: ...we past the famous battle grounds about sunset, it is situated four miles below the city on the same side of the river and as I gazed upon it I could all but see the string of cotton bags and Old Hickory and his men behind them using up the red coats & and packing up the hams. The old general must have been very fond of bacon... He also writes of news from Texas: ...the news is that the Texonians have captured Gen Coss, killed 3 hundred and taken seven hundred prisoners. And previous to this...a small party of volunteers from this place and New orleans consisting of 24 men were taken by the Mexicans and carried to Tampico and shot as rebels. The affair has created a great excitement all over the country... Usual folds, else fine. (200/300)

Vintage matte finish, black and white photograph of Jeffers with Robert Gros, the two are standing behind a rock wall with a weather vane in the background and Jeffers is pointing at something in the distance, oblong 7.5 x 9.5, inscribed in light area: Dear Bob Gros, Who is the wild man with you? He seems friendly, but it alarms me to see his wind-blown head so close to your highly cultured countenance. Cordial, Robinson Jeffers. Very good. (150/250)

189. [Juan Fernandez, Islands of - 1846]. Rare Autograph Letter from sailor William Kirkham to Jonathan Kirkham, one page, quarto, On Board the Ship Spitfire, 12 December 1846. We are now off Cape Horn...sailing...towards Cape of Good Hope...we have been to the Island of Juan Fernandez which a very barren and rocky place...a mountain in the center of the island covered with small shrubs and rocks...on the side of the island where Juan Fernandez stayed is a small stream of fresh water; we also saw the cave in which it is supposed he dwelt...We stopped also at Terra Del Fuego where we saw Indians of great stature and of a ferocious & hostile character, so we made them a few presents and left them... Area of paper loss in upper right corner, minor wear and light age toning. The islands were discovered about 1563 by Spanish navigator Juan Fernandez and prior to 1840 were used as a penal colony. Alexander Selkirk, who remained alone on one of the islands from 1704 to 1709, was the original of Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. (300/400)

Actor. 2 Typed Letters Signed on imprinted stationary, each one page, octavo, Santa Monica, 26 October 1962 & 30 December 1963, one being Laurel's own personal imprinted stationary with the other being from the Oceana Apt. Hotel. The first letter is to "Phil" regarding a Joe Laurel, a song & dance comic who capitalized on the use of the name, and signed comically, "Bestest from us both." The second letter thanks Dave & Joyce McLean for a package of cookies, but no thanks since Laurel reports he is a diabetic. Fine. (300/500)

201. Lenin, Vladimir Ilych. Bolshevik, founder of the Russian Communist state. Original ink and watercolor bust portrait of Lenin as a child, and an original ink drawing of Lenin as a child, seated on the ground with his knees drawn to his chest. These are loose in an album, along with a number of color reproductions of illustrations of Lenin's life, a few photographs, etc., and a 100th anniversary (1870-1970) coin featuring Lenin. Also, a T.L.s. from a Corniliu Gravilescu in Moscow transmitting the material to his associate in the United States: "...How are you doing today, Sir? I have a special parcel for you today. I hope you will find it quite pleasing... Enclosed you will find two rare forms of Vladimir (Uylanov) now formerly know as Lenin. Thre is artwork performed in the year of 1878, done by at artist at that time. He came to the home and did these for the family, not knowing that someday he would become famous. I have acquired them through Boris who was one of the relative of Vladimir. He then sent them to me in 1960...." Very good or better condition, unusual and quite rare drawings of the father of Russian communism as a child. (400/700)

Fine condition, a marvelous homage to the great revolutionary communist, recently sent to this country from Mother Russia.

To Dear Dunbar. Terrific letter in which London expresses his views on Socialism, Nietzscheanism, and Agnosticism with regard to his work Martin Eden which had appeared in Pacific Monthly: ...While I am certainly no disciple of Nietzsche, I am nevertheless compelled to believe that at no time before the very present has the Nietzschean thought been so vital and wide-reaching. Agnosticism has always been and always will be. And as regards Socialism, from my understanding of it, it includes your Cosmism, Industrial Unionism, Materialistic Monism, and all the other Isms under the sun...I don't know if you have read the chapter in MARTIN EDEN where the ‘real dirt' discussed Materialistic Monism versus Idealism. Industrial Unionism has no place in the development of MARTIN EDEN. He never belonged to a labor union in his life... Some age browning, with a large signature of London. (1000/1500)

WIFE OF JACK THE RIPPER!

218. Maybrick, Florence Elizabeth. 1865-1941. Southern belle who married James Maybrick, an Englishman who owned a trading firm in Liverpool, in 1881. In 1889 she was accused of poisoning him with arsenic, was tried in one of the century's most famous cases, was convicted and sentenced to death. Her sentence was commuted to twenty years, of which she served fifteen, being released in 1904. According to a book released in 1993, The Diary of Jack the Ripper, recently discovered evidence identifies James Maybrick as Jack the Ripper and further claims that Florie did not poison her husband but he died from accidental self-inflicted overdoses of arsenic. 219. [Medical Letter - 1832]. Autograph Letter by Dr. Cockey to his brother Paul, also a doctor, three+ pages, quarto, Utica, New York, 3 May 1832. He gives detailed accounts of some of his most important cases, including treating the young daughter of Mr. Wackter: ...sick of an incipient bilious fever and hysteria combined, I immediately bled and purged her freely, on Saturday she was so much better that I thought it unnecessary to visit her any more... 220. [Medical Letter - Psychiatry - 1846]. Autograph Letter by Seth Otis to noted early psychiatrist Amariah Brigham, one page, quarto, Chicago, 4 September 1846. Otis asks Brigham to take his son into his asylum and carefully review his case as he: has had great misfortunes in business which I feel well satisfied has impaired his mind... Fine condition. 222. Mercer, Johnny. 1909-1976. American lyricist and composer. Typed Document Signed by Mercer and musician Saul Chaplin, one page, quarto, Hollywood, 4 March 1957, addressed to Sol C. Siegel Productions. Mercer and Chaplin agree to write lyrics and music for songs to be used in the film Merry Andrew, which was released in 1958 and starred Danny Kaye and Pier Angeli. 224. Monroe, James. 1758-1831. 5th President of the U.S. Ornate partly-printed Document Signed James Monroe as President, one page, large oblong folio, on vellum, Washington, 1 June 1823. Grant of 80 acres of land in Missouri to Soloman Fry of Kentucky. With intact white paper wafer seal affixed with red wax in lower left. Fine condition. A fresh, clean, attractive document with a strong signature, expertly matted with a color reproduction of his White House portrait. (500/700)

225. Monroe, Marilyn. 1926-1962. Legendary American leading lady. Bold pencil signature on menu for the Masquers Roast and Rib Dinner for Charles Coburn, Los Angeles, 20 November 1953. Also signed by Jane Russell and Charles Coburn, both of whom had appeared with Monroe in her recently completed film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Accompanied by a copy of a photograph of the dinner and the waiter who obtained the autographs. Folded at center, light soiling. (2000/2500)

226. [Monroe, Marilyn]. Group of five color photographs of the actress by taken by noted photographer, Bert Stern, each 20 x 22.5, original mounts, photographer's proofs lettered A in lower left and signed by Stern in lower wide white margin. Four great facial poses and one classic upper body nude pose holding transparent scarf. These famous images were taken by Stern during his last sitting with Monroe for Vogue magazine. Three of the facial shots have several surface scratches, all have minor surface defects. (3000/5000)

He writes of a murder case, fixing up a cabin, etc. With original envelope. 2. Autograph Letter Signed, four pages, quarto, Deer Lodge, 24 June 1868. In part: ...I wrote you from Salt lake and from Helena and also from here a few days ago, giving you an account of the changes wrought in this town since we left. The Sunday school quite a success... 229. Mountbatten, Louis. 1900-1979. 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma. Killed by Irish terrorist bomb. Remarkable archive of letters and documents relating to the writing and editing of Franklyn A. Johnson's Defense by Ministry, (Holmes & Meier, 1979), the first overall history of Britain's Ministry of Defense. Includes: 50 Typed Letters Signed Mountbatten of Burma, totaling over 80 pages, varying sizes, written from Broadlands, Romsey, Hampshire, London and at sea, 17 December 1962 to 26 July 1979. Many of the letters bear autograph postscripts, all to Franklyn Johnson concerning his book. Two Autograph Letter Signed Mountbatten of Burma, fives pages, octavo, Classibawn Castle, Cliffoney and H.M. Yacht Britannia, 24 August 1973 and 2 February 1974, to Johnson about his book. Autograph Manuscript, four pages, quarto, an essay on the ancestry of Earl Mountbatten with a diagram of the family tree. Also included: Typed text of a portion of Johnson's book with extensive corrections and additions in Mountbatten's hand. With over 50 carbon copies of letters from Johnson to Mountbatten and numerous clippings, telegrams, notes, and related materials all concerning the book. Fourteen black and white photographs, quarto, of Johnson and Mountbatten at various official functions. On outstanding collection filled with important historical and political content. 231. [Native Americans - Dissolution of the Cherokee]. Lengthy Autograph Letter by Isaac Foster, three pages, folio, Chatham, 28 December 1832, to his son in Georgia. He mentions Andrew Jackson, gives his views on the Cherokees' case before the Supreme Court over their lands: ...the Exchange of Territory, still I do not feel altogether satisfied...my opinion...is founded upon the declared rights of man, those rights that are inalienable which no earthly power has the right to divest us of, unless they are forfeited, such as the right of Life, of Liberty, of possessions, for I cannot justify myself in holding those rights and denying them to another, tho he might be an Indian... and on Nullification: ...let me know how the Nullifiers of the south go on, whether they mean to pursue their mad schemes...& whether there is any considerable military force drawing around them.... He also writes about the governor and people of South Carolina and the news of their legislative convention. Light age toning and a few light stains. (350/500)

235. [Nicollett, Joseph N.]. 1786-1843. French-born American explorer and mathematician. Explored and mapped the upper Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Autograph Letter Signed by B. Percival, civil engineer, Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, in French, two pages, quarto, Fort Jonson, North Carolina, 30 January 1833, to Nicollett. Partially translated. An interesting scientific letter discussing a region of the Savannah River called Canalettor (?) Ferry, and requesting Nicollett to go there and report on the nature, the quantity and quality of the rocks which form the cataracts and the possibility of changing the river to make it more navigable. 252. [Nixon. Richard]. Rare White House Christmas card from 1972, 11 x 14, cover in deep red velour with the presidential seal embossed on the front, containing an excellent color reproduction of Theodore Roosevelt's official White House portrait with small gold metal plate beneath it reading: Theodore Roosevelt - By John Singer Sargent - The White House Collection from The President and Mrs. Nixon - Christmas 1972. The card also contains a statement giving the history of the painting printed in raised gilt letters, unsigned. This presidential Christmas card was very controversial, deemed too ostentatious and pulled by the Republican National Committee after less than 2000 cards had been mailed. Minor wear to cover, else fine. (250/400)
