267. [Presidential Pens]. Lot of six official presidential bill signing pens, each in original custom box with gilt-stamped signature of the president and the seal of the United States on the cover, included are pens from: Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, vice-president Nelson Rockefeller, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. According to the consignor, Dr. Donal Brody, all of the pens were used for bill signing, the Reagan pen was used to sign the Veterans Memorial Bill and the Rockefeller pen was used to sign a bill in his capacity as President of the Senate. Typed Document Signed in full on imprinted The Objectivist Inc. stationery, one page, quarto, New York, Empire State Building, 18 March 1969. Contract with Kay Nolte Smith for the publication of her article entitled The Depths at Their Heights, in The Objectivist, also signed by Kay Nolte Smith. Rand has crossed out the name of the Nathaniel Branden Institute and initialed it, her relationship with Nathaniel Branden ended bitterly in August 1968. Fine. (700/1000)

274. [Rickenbacker, Eddie V.]. 1890-1973. American aviator. Lot of three items. 1. Extraordinary turned oak bowl, 10 x 12 x 6, with silver fittings and two plaques bearing presentations from the men of the 94th Aero Squadron. One plaque is etched with the famous Hat in the Ring logo of the Squadron and 94th P.S. The other reads Capt. E.V. Rickenbacker - 9/25/18. Overall very good condition. 2. Personalized grooming set, in custom leather folding case gilt-stamped with Rickenbacker's name and address, containing silver and glass boxes and jars and a hair brush. With stamp of the French maker inside. Very good condition. 3. Small metal luggage tag stamped with Rickenbacker's name and address and an image of his plane, circa 1920. (3000/5000)

279. Rodgers, Richard. American composer. Typed Document Signed in full on ornate imprinted Metro-Goldwyn Mayer Pictures stationery, two separate pages, quarto, Culver City, 13 July 1954. Signed by Rodgers as President of Rodgers and Hammerstien Pictures, an amendment to their agreement of June 14, 1954, detailing the terms for the production of rush prints, etc. during the filming of Oklahoma. Rodgers and Hammerstein won an Oscar for their score on this film. Two file holes in upper blank margin, else fine. (500/700)

280. Rogers, Will. 1879-1935. American humorist. Vintage black and white portrait photograph, bust pose, 8 x 10, inscribed and signed by Rogers in light area of his coat: To Robert Gros - A friend of my boy Bill, Pete Nichee, Will Rogers. Contained in homemade wooden frame to which has been affixed a rope used by Rogers in one of his performances, 14 x 18. Fine condition. (800/1200)

281. Rogers, Will. Partly-printed Document Signed Will Rogers, one page, oblong octavo, Beverly Hills, circa 1934. Bank of America, Beverly Hills Branch check signed but not filled in by Rogers. This check was given to Robert Gros by Rogers who told him if he was ever in trouble that he was to fill in the check and use it. Gros helped Will Rogers, Jr. on several occasions at Stanford University and this check was given in appreciation for his friendship. It was a prized possesion of Bob Gros and the cornerstone of his collection of autographs. Small stain in R of Rogers' name, folded at center, else fine. With original partial Stanford envelope. Signed checks of Rogers are very scarce. (700/900)

288. Roosevelt, Franklin D. President of the United States. Rare black and white montage portrait photograph by official White House photographer Leo G. Hessler of President Roosevelt surrounded by vignettes of his personal advisors who Elliott Roosevelt referred to as his right-hand men: Louis M. Howe, Stephen T. Early, and Marion McIntyre, 10 x 13.25, circa 1930s. Roosevelt has inscribed the photo to Leo Hessler and signed in full as have all three secretaries. Only a handful of these photographs were made for the private use of the President. Fine condition. Accompanied by an unsigned copy of Elliott Roosevelt's biography of his father, with many interesting anecdotes on FDR and the people around him. (2500/4000)

Signed in full by Roosevelt on limitation page, which bears an exquisite color-printed view of the White House. This is copy number 2459. Postmaster General James A. Farley has inscribed the book to Robert Gros and signed on the limitation page in the lower area well below Roosevelt's signature. Minor wear. (800/1200)

Summers, Washington, he writes: I found your fine letter on my return from the cruise and I hope that...you will come up to Albany to have a talk with me about agricultural exportable surpluses. There are many people who believe that we should concentrate on the wheat problem only but as you know, I am a cotton grower myself in Georgia and I believe that we should consider the problem of cotton as well as wheat... One letter concerns Welles' opposition to a policy of appeasement toward the Soviet Union: ...as during the Moscow Conference of December, 1945, it has been a policy of appeasement of the worst kind in that we abandoned vital principles... 320. [United States Navy - Arleigh Burke]. Rear Admiral. During World War II he commanded Destroyer Squadron 23 in the Pacific, he was dubbed 31 Knot Burke by Bull Halsey because of the speed with which he could engage the Japanese. Lot of ten Typed Letters Signed Arleigh or Arleigh Burke mostly on his color-imprinted stationery as Chief of Naval Operations, eleven pages in all, quarto, 1958-1965. All to Robert Gros, writing about an overhaul on a plane used by admirals in the pacific, personal matters regarding naval officers, the Center for Strategic Studies, etc. Fine condition. In the letter dated 24 January 1973 Turner describes to funeral services for Admiral Herbert D. Riley The book of attendance read like a history of the post-war navy...I had arranged a gun salute and a flyover at the Admiral's request... He writes of his last tour at sea Instead of the change of command being in Athens, it was out at sea in the midst of the Jordanian Crisis. Instead of being in a cruiser it was in an aircraft carrier, the Independence...we were running hard out at sea learning the techniques of controlling a Carrier Task Group...Admiral Zumwalt has ordered me back to Washington... One Autograph Document Signed, three pages, folio, concerning the case of the People vs. John Morgan before the New York Supreme Court. Three partly-printed documents, two with Van Buren's name printed in the text, each one page, signed on verso with filing notations. Two brief Autograph Documents Signed M. Van Buren - Atty. Gel., each one page, octavo, with notations on court cases. Ten additional printed and manuscript documents, twelve pages, with notations in Van Buren's hand, all concerning court cases. Most of the documents are lightly browned with age, some breaks at folds, and minor soiling. An interesting collection from the beginnings of Van Buren's political career. (2000/3000)

325. [Vaudeville Collection]. Wonderful collection formed by C.S. Peterson, who, from the turn of the century through the 1920s enjoyed a remarkable career as a vaudeville star, working in a trained horse act, later branching out into acrobatics, first as Auer and DeOnzo then with his wife as The Auers and finally, as the Novelty Clintons famous for extraordinary jumping. Archive includes: twenty-five signed photographs, cabinet cards and postcards of American and European vaudeville acts including Scottish music-hall comedian Sir Harry Lauder, acrobat Phil Godfrey, James Adair, Mignonete Kokin, Kittie O'Brien, Alma Tegge, Frankie Kelcey, Emma Adelphi, Phil and Phlora, plus many others. With twenty-three photographs and cabinet cards of Leon Morris' Educated and Comedy Ponies, two signed by Morris. Also present is an Autograph Letter Signed of Leon Morris, one page, quarto, no date, a letter of introduction for C.S. Peterson who, after four years with Morris, apparently left to look for other work. The lot includes sixteen photographs of C.S. Peterson's various acts, and many vaudeville programs. President of the convention that ratified the constitution of the U.S. In 1782, when the people west of Augusta were suffering from lack of food, he employed his negro slaves and boats, for some considerable time, to transport rice up the river to them. Manuscript Letter Signed in full, one page, small quarto, 8 February 1785. Interesting letter in which he instructs his correspondent to revive a petition before the Georgia House of Representatives: ..therefore, you will not blame me if you do not apply and I recover the money from you in March term, which I cannot delay any longer. To Robin Dunbar offering some honest criticism of his play: ...I dislike to see people wasting time on follies & you are sincere & able enough to bear to be told that your play is absolutely hopeless... He continues with further advice ...Playwriting is the most exacting of all arts, it requires the most strenuous work and study...my recommendation to you is to withdraw the work from circulation... Appointment of William Bache as Surveyor for the Port of Philadelphia. With embossed white paper water seal affixed with red wax in lower left. Bache was Benjamin Franklin's grandson. Minor wear with a few minor breaks t folds. Large signature of Jefferson, both signatures are very good. An attractive document with a nice tie to Franklin. (7000/9000)

On the verso he has written that he painted the portrait in Royen in 1939 and isgned Picasso, Cannes, 25/4/61. Very good condition, Picasso's writing is large and bold.
