Inscribed by Burroughs to his brother-in-law on the front free endpaper, "To Ed Gilbert, Always best wishes, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Lexington, Feb. 9, 1939." Historically accurate novel of the Apache war with the white man in the Southwest, reflecting Burroughs' respect for the Apaches gained when he was a young man with the 7th U.S. Cavalry in Arizona in 1896-1897.
