Description:
9 vols. Steel-engraved frontispiece portrait in Vol. I. 8¼x5, uniform 19th century full vellum, covers with gilt decorations and rules creating a panel in which is an original gouache painting of a scene from Byron's works, spines decorated in gilt, morocco lettering pieces, all edges gilt.
Each volume with a beautiful fore-edge painting in addition to the hand-painted illustrations on both front and rear covers. Finely detailed and very striking, these include: Vol. I, Gibraltar on on the front cover, Newstead Abbey as the fore-edge, and Belem Castle, London, on the rear cover; Vol. II, Cintra on the front cover, Cadiz as the fore-edge, Malta on the rear cover; Vol. III, Ithaca on the front cover, Corfu as the fore-edge, Geneva on the rear cover; Vol. IV, Verona on the front cover, Lausanne as the fore-edge, Cintra on the back cover; Vol. V, Rome on the front cover, Florence as the fore-edge, Thun (Switzerland) on the back cover; Vol. VI, Venice on the front cover, Pisa as the fore-edge, the Bay of Naples on the back cover (Vesuvius smoking in the background); Vol. VII, Rhodes on the front cover, the Acropolis in Athens as the fore-edge, Constantinople on the back cover; Vol. VIII, Madrid on the front cover, the Pantheon in Rome as the fore-edge, Interlachen on the back cover; Vol. IX, the Rialto on the front cover, the Hague as the fore-dege, Verona on the back cover. The last three volumes are from different publishers, with varying volume numbers within (a few seem to have been relettered), but all uniformly bound and very striking, the execution of both the cover paintings and fore-edge paintings is very accomplished.
Condition:
Minor shelf wear, a few scuffs to the extremities, slight discoloration to the vellum; a few with bookseller's stickers on front endpapers, occasional light foxing within, in nearly fine condition, a lovely set.
