Description:
Copper-engraved map. 7.8x10.2 cm (3x4"); matted and framed under plexiglass.
Little map of North and South America, from the Philippe Galle edition of the miniature Ortelius atlas, Epitome Theatri Orteliani. First published in 1598, this is from the 1601 edition, with Latin text on the verso. Burden states that "this well engraved map is improved in the delineation of South America" over its predecessor, but bemoans the fact that overall it has less information.
Condition:
Some mild, barely noticable discolored streaks in the Pacific, perhaps offset from old ink writing, near fine.
