Description:
[220] pp. (*4, A-T4, V2, 2A-2G4). Woodcut printer's device on title-page. (4to) 8-3/8x6, 19th century full brown morocco ruled in gilt, all edges gilt.
Rare and early edition in English verse of Virgil's epic poem. ESTC lists only 14 copies, including six in the United States; OCLC/WorldCat lists seven copies, two of them not in ESTC. In this copy, the four leaves in the first signature are washed and sized, with top margins extended and corners restored; they are possibly supplied from another copy. A note on the rear endpaper by a specialist at Bernard Quaritch states "Collated complete." STC 24800. Bookplate of John Morgan.
Condition:
Some minor soiling and foxing to contents, last leaf with some marginal repairs, sized, still an exceptional copy of an early English edition of Virgil, in a very nice 19th century binding with just a bit of shelf rubbing.
