Description:
[4], 276 pp. (8vo) 7½x4¾, period paneled calf. First Edition.
An attack on stage plays, arguing that while classical authors had used music correctly, modern composers abuse music by permitting immodest or indecent words to be set to melodies. The last four leaves contain music, "A Canon of Four Parts in One, According to Mr. Purcell’s Rule of Fuging.."; Purcell was one of the few modern composers who were correct in their compositions. The present copy was formerly in the Fuller Collection of the Spokane Public Library, with perforated stamp and small rubberstamp to dedication-page, rubberstamped number in margin of p.55. There are several instances of old ink marginalia, and both sides of the rear free endpaper and the rear pastedown are covered with ink manuscript recipes, Carraway Cake, Safron Cake, etc.
Condition:
Covers scuffed, front detached but present along with the title-page and front endpapers, title splitting along gutter, darkened a bit; internally very good.
