Description:
835, [1] pp. With forty etchings by Robert Motherwell on twenty folded leaves, some with color backgrounds. 13x9¾, unbound signatures, set in folding box covered in blue cloth with white flecks, paper spine label. No. 91 of 175 copies, of which 150 were for sale, designed by Andrew Hoyem & printed under his direction at the Arion Press.
Beautiful fine printing of the twentieth century classic, with original etchings by Robert Motherwell. Printed in Perpetua type on French mould-made Johannot paper, with a heavier weight of Johannot used for the etchings. This is one of only a very few sets of the original, unbound signatures in existance, purchased directly from the publisher in unbound state at the specific request of the buyer, and suitable for fine binding. "Considered by many the greatest novel of the 20th century, Joyce's Ulysses deserved this typographical tribute, painstaking craftsmanship, and the artistic contribution of a painter of international stature. Robert Motherwell (1915-1991), a founder of Abstract Expressionism, counted Joyce as his favorite modern author and drew upon the writings for titles to his paintings, drawings, and prints throughout his career. The project was four years in planning and a year and a half in production'' ("Checklist of Arion Press Books").
