Description:
[20], 202, [16] leaves. *-**8, ***4, A-Z8, AA-CC8, DD10. Woodcut printer's device on title-page and final leaf; 22 woodcuts in the text. (8vo) 6x4, 18th century(?) full vellum, earlier leather spine label. First Edition.
Rare and important work on alchemy, presenting the earliest use of allegorical symbolism in an alchemical text as a means of graphic expression for alchemy. Sometimes listed under the 14th century alchemist Petrus Bonus, from whose works Lacinius edited the present book. Petrus Bonus defended the dual scientific and religious foundations of alchemy, and was one of the first Latin authors to draw an analogy between the Philosophers' Stone and Christ. This is the first issue, with Aldine device on the title-page; the edition was reissued in 1556 with the first 8 leaves reprinted and Ziletti device on the title-page. With running heading on L1 uncorrected ("CVI SVBALTERNETVR" rather than the proper "METALLORVM"); foliation corrected in quire CC.
Condition:
A little shelf wear, Bonus's name faintly written in ink at top of the title-page, still in fine condition, exceptionally scarce thus.
