Description:
2 vols. xxiv, 800; [801]-1600 pp. Illustrated from photographs. 8¾x5½, orginal blue cloth decorated in gilt, lettered in gilt & silver. First Edition.
Signed and inscribed by several participants in the conference, including Swami Vivekananda, the great Hindu sage (in both English and Hindi); Indian spiritualist Virchand A. Gandhi (also in both languages); B.B. Nagarkar, whose article covers social reform in India, and who has inscribed and signed both the book and a cabinet photograph of him, again in both Hindi and English; Charles Carroll Bonney, who served as president of the assembly; John Henry Barrows, a Chicago minister; and Laura Ormison Chant, of London, England. The book is the record, with contributions of many of the participants, of a truly remarkable assemblage of the world's religious leaders as the dawn of a new century beckoned, a century which was to fall tragically short of the universal brotherhood the parliament sought.
Condition:
Covers rubbed, mainly at joints and extremities; marginal darkening within, generally very good.
