Description:
Vol. II only. 194, [4], 388, [4], 382 pp. Illustrated with a double-map copper-engraved map with various hand-colored area borders for the Linlithgow Shire between the Edinburgh and Stirling Shires. 8¼x5¼, bound in half period calf and marbled boards, gilt-lettered red calf spine label. First Edition.
Divided into three sections: Linlithgow, Haddington, and Berwick. Golf is mentioned on page 334 in the second section of Haddington under the North Berwick area. It states: Games. --The prevailing popular game of the parish is the Golf, for which the western links are peculiarly well adapted. The North Berwick Golf Club was established on the 8th May 1832, and is formed of noblemen and gentlemen from all parts of the country. The number of members is limited to 50, who are admitted by ballot; one black ball excludes, and the ballot must take place in the rotation of nomination, 'before going to dinner.' The regular meetings are on the first Wednesday of May, June, July, and August. The Captain is elected annually in August, and the rules of the green are, with a slight exception, the rules of the Golf Club of St. Andrews..."
Condition:
Front board detached, front joint split through, some scuffing and rubbing to leather (chiefly to spine), light shelf wear and soiling, corners and spine ends a bit chipped &/or rubbed; faint foxing to endpapers, tears to front prelim. page, small label from a Birmingham England bookseller on rear pastedown; contents clean; a fair to good copy - definately worthy of restoration.
