Description:
[6] pp. + title printed in gilt, and 54 hand-colored plates each with tissue guard and letterpress description leaf. 10x6-7/8, period half-morocco, spine gilt, all edges gilt. First Edition.
Lovely copy of this scarce botanical. "Miss Rosenberg", as the title identifies her, has been identified as Mary Elizabeth Duffield (nee Rosenberg), 1819-1914, a British painter who may have specialized in watercolor botanicals (see Dr. Kathleen Nichols' compilation of British women artists in the 1893 Exposition). This would make Miss Rosenberg only about 26 when she wrote and drew this work. The text descriptions certainly impart a charming, youthful enthusiasm for these, "the brilliant gems of Flora" (paraphrased from Preface). With bright, nicely detailed hand-coloring.
Condition:
Few minor scuffs and rubs to binding; light marginal spot on frontispiece, some tissue guards browned, a very few scattered tiny spots, one text leaf with marginal hole; plates about fine and overall near fine.
