| Inscribed presentation copy, signed in blue ink on the title by Ginsberg “For William Targ, editor, Manhattoes 1968 in hope that he or other confrere will preserve the literary opus of the man who walked ‘with shoes full of blood on the snowbank docks’ see p. 13, Allen Ginsberg.” Margin of page 13 next to the quote referred to in Ginsberg’s inscription, Ginsberg has written “Herbert Huncke.” Also, Ginsberg has turned the “O” in Howl into a large sunflower drawing with a sun and sun rays beaming down on it. Ginsberg's revolutionary poem, which had been seized by the U.S. Collector of Customs Chester MacPhee, soon after publication, setting off one of the most important episodes in the battle for freedom of the press, and against censorship. First printing with "75 cents" lettered in light blue on rear cover and only the 1956 date on the copyright page. First issue with dedication page listing Kerouac, Burroughs, Neal Cassady and Lucien Carr. Pocket Poet Series No. 4. Cook, The City Lights Pocket Poets Series, pp. 21-22. |
