Description:
Original watercolor painting on cardstock, 9¾x5¾, by John Byam Shaw (1872-1919). Signed and dated "Byam Shaw 1911" lower left. Mounted on matboard.
Lively painting of a jockey and mount trotting on the grass under a cloudy sky with a track and other mounted riders in the background. Captioned in pencil on back of matboard "P(?) going down to the start of the 1911 Derby." Derby Day at Epsom Downs in 1911 was the site of a severe storm which began just at the conclusion of the race. More than 2 inches of rain fell in under an hour, accompanied by thunder, lightning, and hail. Two people were killed by lightning. Shaw was a Pre-Raphaelite painter, book illustrator, and educator.
