Description:
[x], 117 + 16 ad pp. 6¾x4, original silver-green watered silk, spine gilt-lettered, top edge gilt. First Edition.
First Edition of Wells's first literary book, preceded by two scientific textbooks. This slight maiden effort consists of twelve satirical dialogues and two brief sketches. The day after its publication, The Time Machine was published. The terminal publisher's catalogue lacks pp. 5/6 in all copies, allegedly because it was noticed that one listing rendered the name of Edmund Gosse as Edmund Goose. [Currey p. 522. Hammond D1. Wells, Bibliography, 3.]
Condition:
Rubbed along edges and joints, ink spots at upper front cover, front hinge cracked; generally very good.
