Description:
Book illustrated from photos, facsimile letters and writings by Miller and engravings; measures 12x8˝, spiral-bound card-stock book with decorative metallic foil-covered attached jacket (inner cloth lining) in multiple colors, front cover flap fold. Together with: 12 broadsides (22x17") from Miller's artwork; large newspaper sheet The Rafu Shimpo (Los Angeles, June 19, 1970); and a card-stock plate with pictorial title label and limitation stamp, all housed inside the specially-made wooden portfolio box coated with decorative golden-leaf paper and slide-out front cover with two-tone onlay wooden borders, book inside special hollow-out section of stryofoam; also, an original acrylic painting (13x10") employing deck of card “Jack” faces on thin stock paper affixed to inside back of wooden box not signed but is by Henry Miller given as a gift to Mike Newman by Jon Webb (original foam over painting margins), front with pictorial cover from photo of Miller with his Japanese wife Hoki Tokuda and the book title; plus Mike Newman's engraved metal label. No. 38 of 99 hand-numbered copies, with 3 broadsides signed by Miller in pencil (dated 10/15/70); book signed and dated May 1, 1970 by Miller in black ink, also signed by Gypsy Lou Webb in red ink; additionally inscribed and signed to Mike Newman by Jon Webb dated Las Vegas 1/5/71 (in the colophon) in green ink. Edition "F".
Mike Newman's copy, with his personal metal plate on the front cover, plus extra original Miller painting (as a gift from the publisher). Three of the broadsides signed in pencil by Henry Miller (as called for in this edition). The last significant book production from the famous New Orleans (later Albuquerque) publisher (Jon and Gypsy Lou Webb), who also had an art gallery, where they displayed various Bohemian artists, thus their involvement here with Miller. The book production, with all the different editions, materials used and overall expenses caused major financial problems, plus along with the death of Jon Webb in 1971, soon ended the beautiful era of the Loujon Press. Shifreen & Jackson A175f: "It is believed that no more than 65 copies of this edition were actually published."
Condition:
Slight wear overall, title card stock with light finger-soiling, two 1" splits to foam at inside corners of hollow-out section; otherwise a fine copy.
