Description:
Color silkscreen illustrations throughout by Bezalel Schatz (7 double-page color illustrations, many single-page and decorations in color). Text entirely by Miller, all reproduced from hand-writing by serigraphy. (Folio) 14½x11¾, unbound signatures (as issued) housed in a blue silk drop-back case. 1 of 800 copies originally produced (about 500 survived), signed on verso of last serigraph by the author and by the artist. First Edition.
The book is a beautiful American livre d'artiste, printed entirely in silkscreen and with the striking illustrations of Palestinian artist, Bezalel Schatz. The text is a facsimile of Miller's holograph, a chapter from Black Spring. Bezalel was Miller's brother-in-law at the time; he conceived the project and created the silkscreens, taking nearly two years to complete the work while living in Big Sur. From the edition of 800, only about 500 survived, many of which were bound later. This copy has two leaves with the worm holes which are characteristic of this issue. Accompanied with this issue is a photocopy of a scarce promotional pamphlet issued in 1947 by Miller and Schatz, a photocopy of an article by Beniamino Bufano on the book, and copies of the bibliographic citation. Shifreen & Jackson A60a (with significant mistake); also see A60b-c, 61a-b & A79.
Condition:
Scattered small wormholes (about 15) due to storage, some cracking at folds; but a fine and entirely untrimmed copy of this important work, housed in a handsome drop-back box.
