vi, [2 fl. - errata and facsimile Romaic letter], 226 pp. (4to) 10½x8½, half modern burgundy morocco & marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition, later issue.
The first edition of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, containing the first 2 Cantos of Byron's first great literary success was published in an edition of only 500 copies which were sold within 3 days. Contains 14 additional poems and an appendix relating to Romaic books and authors. The facsimile leaf is described in the final paragraph on the last page as a letter, "signed and sent by the Bey of Corinth . . ." Randolph's 2nd variant, this copy without the ads; page 189/190 is integral, but with corrected heading (Written Beneath a Picture). Randolph p. 19; PMM 270.
Condition:
Scattered stains and foxing, with spatters to facing pages 104/105, last 50 pages with moderate staining to upper margin; generally very good.
