| Robert F. Stockton was a naval officer during the War of 1812, and fought in the war with Algiers. He was also involved in suppressing piracy in the West Indies, the conveyance to the Texan government of the resolution of the American government providing for annexation, and had a major role in the Mexican War while stationed in California under John C. Fremont. Contains significant source material on both the conquest of California by the Americans and the Fremont fiasco. Cowan, p. 616; Howes B259; Wagner-Camp 271b. |
