August Belmont (1813-1890), banker, businessman, diplomat, and a power broker in the Democratic Party, writes to Senator Gorman of Maryland with regard to the 1884 presidential campaign, attempting to find an alternative to Grover Cleveland, the eventual nominee. "...I expect to see Kingsley again tomorrow & I want him to be the candidate for chairman of the opponents of Cleveland in our Delegation..."
