PBA Galleries - Auctioneers & Appraisers

How to Consign

The consignment process at PBA Galleries begins with you, the client, sending us a list (click here to open or download the list format: Word format or PDF Format) of the property you would like to auction (if you have a large library, you can list just a selection to give us a general idea of the collection).
The list can be brief: author, title, place and date of publication of each book. Any special attributes (illustrated, signed, limited edition, finely leather bound, etc.) should also be noted. For maps, prints and photographs, the engraver's or artist's name along with the date and size of the item will help us in our evaluations.
Auction Fees & Terms
Our commission for selling a consignment at auction is a flat rate:
15% of the first $10,000 of any single item and 10% of everything above $10,000.
The commission is all encompassing and includes insurance, cataloguing, storage, advertising, online services, photography and other miscellaneous auction costs.
PBA Galleries protects all property with a minimum price of one-half the low estimate in gallery auctions and an opening bid that reflects that amount in online auctions. There are no hidden charges. Once property is accepted for auction, we will advise you of the best method of shipment to our auction house in San Francisco. For more detailed coverage of our terms click Consignment Agreement.
Consignment Process
From start to finish, it takes about three to four months for a consignment to sell at PBA Galleries:
  1. Once your property is accepted, you mail it to PBA Galleries;
  2. Upon receipt of the property, we issue you a consignment agreement;
  3. Property is sorted for either our Live Gallery Auctions or Online Auctions;
  4. Gallery Auctions: An illustrated auction catalogue that includes descriptions of the property is mailed to you prior to the auction date. (Catalogues are also posted on our website.);
    Online Auctions: Pre-sale notification is mailed to you prior to the auction sale date. Auction catalogues are not printed for online auctions, but each item offered for sale has a photograph to accompany its online description.);
  5. Ten days after each auction, post-sale notification is mailed to you, announcing your results of sale;
  6. Consignor payment is made on funds received twenty banking days after the date of sale.
We look forward to hearing from you and hope we will have the opportunity to work together on the sale of your property.
