2 volumes. 4, xii, 202, [ii], 163, [1], +[3] ad; [4], [iv], 176, xvi, 258 pp. Frontispiece and additional vignette title page in each volume. (8vo) 17x11 cm (6¾x4½") original plum cloth, black leather spine labels lettered in gilt. Custom box and slipcase. Third Edition, First Illustrated Edition.

Volumes 9 and 10 of the publisher's Standard Novels series. The final definitive text and the first edition to be illustrated, the frontispiece is the first graphic depiction of Frankenstein and the Creature. This was the first truly popular edition of the novel. Shelley incorporated into this edition most of the changes introduced by William Godwin into the 1823 second edition as well as other revisions, including an entirely new chapter and the notable "Introduction" in which she tells the story of the novel's genesis at the now famous storytelling session with Shelley, Byron and Polidori at the Villa Diodati. Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
