Each inscribed by Ellen Ewing Sherman, daughter of Thomas Ewing, wife of General William Tecumseh Sherman, and an influential figure in Washington politics herself during the administration of Abraham Lincoln. One copy is inscribed to her son Thomas Ewing Sherman, noted American lawyer, educator, and Catholic priest. The second copy is inscribed to her daughter Maria Ewing Sherman (later Fitch), the oldest child of General and Mrs. Sherman, her bookplate (Minnie Sherman Fitch) on the front pastedown. Also included is a copy book belonging to General Sherman's mother Maria W. Sherman, the first approximately 20 leaves completed in various hands. 24.5x19.5 cm (9¾x7¾"), period full tan calf, Mrs. Sherman's name stamped in gilt on front.
