Most images measure 7x5 cm (3x2") to 11.5x8.5 cm (4½x3¼"), loose in corner mounts in two albums measuring 12x20 cm (4¾x7¾") and 18.5x21 cm (7¼x11½"), synthetic covers.
Photographs albums from the estate of Tsukane (Kane) Hisatomi, featuring him, his brother Kune Hisatomi, and members of the Hisatomi family during the Second World War, as they were sent to internment camps in 1942, with the two brothers soon opting to join the U.S. Army, where they served with the 442nd Combat Team in Italy and France. The pictures are arranged somewhat chronologically, but with some variation. The smaller album contains some 56 photos, about 29 of which were taken at the Gila River War Relocation Center where the Hisatomi family stayed during internment, located about 30 miles southeast of Phoenix, Arizona. There is also a photograph from February 1943, of the Hisatomi family and friends in the Heart Mountain War Relocation center, located midway between the towns of Cody and Powell in northwest Wyoming, as well as a photograph of the Poston War Relocation Center, located in Yuma County (now in La Paz County) in southwestern Arizona. Also included is a 1942 hand-painted postcard sent to Kane Hisatomi during his training in Fort Robinson, before he was sent to Italy. The card was sent from the Granada War Relocation Center in southeast Colorado. The larger album, with about 155 photographs, includes many of military training, barracks life, fellow soldiers, etc., some possibly overseas in combat theatres. In this album are also additional photographs of internment camps. Kane Hisatumi and his younger brother Kune, were born in 1917 and 1919 in Manteca, California, where the family farmed produce. Following he war, Kane worked for Peterson Tractor & Equipment Co. in San Leandro. He had two children, and died in Walnut Creek in 1999. Kune worked as landscaper and had his own business in Los Angeles, passing in 2012. He left six video of oral family history available at the Hanashi Oral History Video Archive, the world's largest oral history collection of Japanese American World War II veterans' life histories. The photograph albums comprise a fascinating photographic record of the internment and military service of a Japanese-American family during World War II.
