Second Lieutenant Morris R. Jeppson, who had recently joined the crew of the Enola Gay and was on his first combat mission, relates his part in the dropping of the first atomic bomb used in warfare, in response to several questions. In part:"...I pulled an electrical multi-conductor plug out of Little Boy - a plug somewhat larger that an A battery. This testing plug had permitted me to test the electrical circuits of the bomb - everything from batteries to four small radar height finders. I then inserted a red coded firing plug that enabled the circuits of the bomb to detonate it at a height of 1800 feet while falling at the speed of sound! That was a short moment of worry and perhaps fear. The bomb was now armed... This gun type U235 bomb had never been tested and the efficiency was unknown. It could have been more powerful... War causes civilian casualties whatever weapon is used. War and casualties are sad and bad and shouldn't happen. Regrettably they do. Morris R.
