Forstaar I?”

Lot 496 – Map of Greenland: Printed in the memory of Knud Rasmussen

ENGLISH:
The auction 535 on June 19, 2014 will offer the collection of the Danish professor and Dr. Dan Laursen. Dr. Laursen worked for the Arctic Institute of Copenhagen, and was on several expeditions to Greenland. For a time, Dr. Laursen was the editor of ‘Tidsskriftet Grønland’ and ‘Meddelelser om Grønland’. Throughout his long career in the field of Arctic studies he accumulated an extensive and relevant collection, now for sale. Among one of the highlights is lot 440 ‘Institutiones chirurgicae, in Quibus quicquid ad rem chirurgicam pertinet optima a novissima ratione pertractatur (…)’. It is a medical encyclopedia, which was donated to the Holstensburgske Missions in Greenland by the Danish physician Henric Christopher Glahn, while he served there from 1763-69. Therefore, this copy might be one of the first guides to medicine brought to Greenland. Glahn wrote the following on the title-page: “[H.C.G. presented these Dr. H’s I. C. to the Holstensburgske Missions in Greenland where they shall always be a piece of equipment which the ministers of the locality can make use of, to the benefit of themselves and the population.]”

Material on Knud Rasmussen is also offered in auction 535. The Danish/Greenlandic adventurer went on several important expeditions within Greenland. He is probably best known for his seven expeditions to Thule, where he in 1910 built the Thule Station, which came to function as a base and trading center. During the last expedition to Thule he got a stomach infection and died after a few months, when pneumonia also kicked in. After his tragic death, the Danish poet Tom Kristensen wrote ‘Det er Knud som er død’ in 1933. The poem later became the inspiration for the title song from The Minds of 99’s mini-EP, which bears the same name. The last verse of Tom Kristensen’s poem in honor of the father of Eskimology goes like this:

“[Islands and lands and rivers are in icy chains closed.
The joy that warmed you all, that fiery joy has been put out.
Freeze, like the rest of us freeze today without fire and glow
for now he’s dead. It is Knud, who is dead.
Do you understand?]” (Mod den yderste Rand, 1936).

Lot 474 is a collection of nine books by and about Knud Rasmussen. One can also find a map of Greenland, made in his honor under lot 496. These and many other interesting books and maps can be found in Sale 535.
