Significant charting of Baja California, but with a great aim, as the preface states: "[This report's] object is to record the methods of conducting a survey for the production of nautical charts which have gradually been developed in the survey of the west coast of Mexico under the direction of the Hydrographic Office... and, by placing the results of experience in the hands of future workers in the same field, to afford a surer means of securing further advance in this most important branch of nautical science."  The largest of the folding maps is "North America. West Coast of Lower California, Cerros Island to Abrejos Point,  Surveyed by the Officers of the U.S.S. Ranger." It measures 72.5x88 cm. The other maps are untitled, showing surveying lines along portions of the coast.
