8 pp. With large hand-colored lithographed folding map. (16mo) 15x10 cm (6x4"), original blindstamped cloth lettered in gilt "Map of California and Adjacent Country by F. Goodwin."

Rare pocket map and guide to California. The striking map is titled: "Map of California and the Adjacent Country Compiled by F. Goodwin from the Best Authors and Actual Observation. Entered According to Act of Congress in the Year 1855 by F. Goodwin..." Lithographed by Geo. E. Leefe. It measures 74.5x52 cm. It has a key with symbols locating Capitol of State, cities, villages, towns, forts, roads, and Sutter’s Saw Mill at Coloma; vignettes of bear, deer, Native Americans, ships, etc. Notwithstanding the striking character of the map, the short text itself is quite significant. Howell's Catalog 50 states:  “The text of this small pamphlet is probably more important than the map since it provides a comprehensive description of the new state of California from its geography and climate to its population and history. Although not particularly distinguished, this map is quite rare and historically interesting. Cowan never saw a copy.” Eberstadt 158 (California Delineated) 137, calls it “One of the rarest of gold-rush books.” Cowan p.254; Streeter Sale 2785; Wheat Gold Region 281.
