12 volumes, sold by subscription only. From the back covers: "The work will form One Elegant Quarto Volume and will be issued in 12 semi-monthly parts at 50 cents each. Each part will contain Three Fine Steel Engravings and 24 pages of text, printed on heavy calendered paper made especially for this work." The work was indeed later issued as a single volume. Volume 1 with pictorial tan wraps published by Henry J. Johnson. The 11 following volumes published by Johnson & Gittens in uniform printed blue wrappers. Includes facsimile of the Declaration of Independence. Alonzo Chappel (1828-1887) was the pre-eminent artist of American leaders and events of his time. Scarce in this format.
