Guglielmini's classic has been called “one of the most important hydraulic works of its time”, cited not only for its classical hydraulics, but for the clarity of its verbal and mathematical expression. The book discusses the nature of rivers and their parts, the motion of water, confluents and estuaries, banks, and materials and application. The historic preface quotes Galileo, Torricelli, Castelli, Mariotte, Viviani, Varignon, Newton, Bernoulli, Poleni, and Grandi. This second edition, enlarged and annotated by Eustachio Manfredi, adds much material that had been found in Guglielmini's papers. Manfredi also corrected some errors, added the notes which follow each chapter, and greatly expanded the index. Among the fine plates are views of rural Italy, a charming view of Bologna, as well as complex geometric figures and calculations. Roberts & Trent, pp. 152-53. Poggendorff I, 974; Riccardi I, 643.
