Achille Richard (1794-1852), a medical doctor and botanist (and the son of a noted botanist), was Professor of Botany at the Faculty of Medicine of Paris, a pharmacist in the French army, and a member of several learned societies. He was one of the leading botanists of his time, and his books are valued for their clarity and their accuracy. This work, Richard’s first, went through at least ten editions in French, and was translated into several editions in English, Dutch, German, Russian, and Spanish. Pritzel 7594. Krüger, Bibliographia Botanica, p. 53. See Wellcome, IV, p. 519, listing the 1822 second edition and translations into English and Spanish, but not our first edition. Not found in any of our other collection catalogues. Krüger, Bibliographia Botanica, p. 460. Hirsch, IV, p. 791. Poggendorff, II, p. 629.
