Osler calls Ward “perhaps the most successful and the best of the 18th- century quacks.” His famous “drop and pill” universal remedy, was a dangerous compound of antimony. Nonetheless he was much patronized and admired, and amassed a considerable fortune. Royal patronage, coupled with a substantial sum apparently achieved by fraud (for which he received a royal pardon), provided him with high visibility, which also made him a target for many who were unimpressed by his arrogant manner and minimal medical knowledge. He was buried with great ceremony in the Poets Corner of Westminster Abbey, "not inappropriately for one so versified against." (Corley). Dr. Johnson judged Ward to have been the dullest man he had ever known.  Wellcome IV, p. 283, also citing five additional issues in 1763.
