Thoughtful answers by the Hungarian-born theoretical physicist considered the "father of the hydrogen bomb". In part: "I think we could have probably forced Japan to surrender without dropping the A-bomb on Hiroshima. We could have dropped one in the sea 50 miles outside Tokyo... After the war, Oppenheimer recommended against the H-bomb, he said that it was because of the technical difficulties but also because of moral considerations. We overcame the technical difficulties and the moral issues were the same as for the A-bomb. In any case... the USSR was close to producing its own H-bomb President Truman decided that I should investigate the possibility of producing ours... Unlike the A-bomb's fission reaction... the H-bomb's fusion reaction has no theoretical limit. Larger bombs may be produced simply by adding more hydrogen fuel..."
