After a brief summary of his service flying B-17's out of England, teamed with future Enola Gay pilot Paul Tibbets and bombardier Tom Ferebee, Van Kirk describes the events leading up to the dropping of the atomic bomb over Hiroshima, and the bombing itself: "...I was selected as the navigator of the plane that would drop the first atomic bomb... We trained through June of 1945... The selected target became Hiroshima. On August 6, 1945, I was the navigator of the B-29 'Enola Gay' and we were on our way to Hiroshima, Japan, for the first atomic bomb mission... At 0915 hours the bomb was dropped on target. It was probably the most important moment of the war. Forty three seconds later the atomic bomb called 'Little Boy' exploded over Hiroshima, destroying the city and ushering in the dawn of the Nuclear Age..."
