In The Journal off the Royal Geographical Society, Volume the Twenty-Ninth. ccxxiv, 464 pp. Folding engraved map. (8vo) 20.6x13 cm (8¼x5¼"), modern half calf & cloth spine lettered in gilt.

First publication of Burton's account of his penetration into the interior of Africa, with John Hanning Speke as his second in command, in search of the source of the Nile River. The journey was to become as famous for the eventually hostile relationship between the two explorers as for any geographical knowledge gained, although the latter was significant. Published in book form the following year in the two volumes as The Lake Regions of Central Africa. Except for the preliminary matter, the entire volume of the Journal is devoted to Burton's narrative, the first time a whole volume was taken up by a single work. Burton was yet to have his disagreements with Speke and this work is shorter and less acrimonious than the book publication. Three small library inkstamps and a few other markings to title page.
