The Sunset article was written during the anti-Japanese furor that gripped the West coast after the 1907 San Francisco mandate to segregate Japanese students from white children in the public schools.
Smith, a Sociology Professor in Oregon, wrote one of a handful serious scholarly studies of Asian-Americans – without racist bias or polemic – before World War II, touching on agricultural work, religion, politics, education, language, culture and discrimination. His book focuses on both Chinese-Americans and Japanese-Americans in Hawaii, as well as the continental US. Romanzo Adams, who wrote the introduction, was author of a classic earlier work on the Japanese in Hawaii (1924) and a controversial study of interracial marriage among Hawaiian Asians and whites.
