Some 200 recipes: Appetizers and Soups, Main Dishes, Vegetables, Salads, Breads, Cakes and Frostings, Pies, Desserts, Cookies, Candies, Canning and Preserves, Beverage. With numerous store ads for various local businesses, many probably Black-owned, and much household advice from the compiler, the “Household Hints” columnist for the city's only African-American newspaper.

The recipes offer an uncommon view of African-American cookery in the north, rather than the more stereotyped dishes of the South. Many have colorful names, such as Foolproof Cake, Hamburger Pie, Sardine Fritters, Super-Special Ham Loaf, Chicken Camille, Garden Gumbo, Two Penny Salad, Southern Spoon Bread, New Orleans Creole Pancakes, President Harrison Cake and Nootsie’s Gingerbread
