In this retrospective letter, Greene recalls his own wartime illness and MacGahan’s subsequent death. Returning to the US, he wrote a memoir about his experiences, taught at West Point, and, during the Spanish-American War, promoted to General, led a brigade against the Spanish in the Philippines.
 

“…my ‘Army Life in Russia’…an account of Mr. MacGahan…written in a spirit of love and admiration which I had in a great measure for him…his sickness and death. I was taken ill with the typhoid fever in the Russian Camp about 12 miles west of Constantinople and I was carried to the house of...Consul-General at Constantinople…." When "MacGahan came in to see how I was getting on… the doctor immediately put him to bed. He developed a case of ‘spotted typhus’ and he died…He was buried at Pera… his body was afterwards exhumed and brought to the United States for reinterment…One of his most intimate friends is Mr. Frank D. Millet, the artist...also a War Correspondent at the time… I was Treasurer of a fund to provide a monument to MacGahan…MacGahan was one of the most lovable men I have ever met and I had the greatest admiration for him…”
