While the dawning of interest in preserving African-American written history can be traced to the pioneering work of Arthur Schomburg and Carter Woodson, before and after World War I, American antiquarian booksellers were slow to recognize a new specialty of collector passion. Though preceded by the Tuttle catalogues, first published in the 1930s, the 1946 Heartman catalogue has become a unique classic because of the unique rarities rescued by Heartman, a German immigrant and Schomburg colleague, from the Southern junk pile, when he relocated from New York to New Orleans and Mississippi. That 200-page imprint has been called “an important bibliography on Black cultural history.” Not until the 1960s, with the dawn of the modern civil rights era, did supplementary catalogues begin to appear, which, for example,  highlighted the writings of W.E.B.DuBois
