Document mortgaging a one-fifth share in the Long Bar Water Company to William Baker for $984. Portions of the mortgage were resold several times, as indicated with additional notations to the document, and it was eventually sold at auction in August of 1853. Water was crucial to successful mining, and the control of local water rights was an important aspect of economic dynamics during the Calfiornia Gold Rush.
